I had a Hotpoint washer dryer that was surplus after we moved house into a place with integrated appliances.

Being a good samaritan I placed it on Facebook MP for free to anyone who required it. My rationale was someone who was maybe in hard times who would appreciate a kind gesture of genuine generosity.

Had a couple contact me. Saying the washer they had was broken and they couldn't afford to replace it so was wondering if it was available and could they have it. Of course. I even helped them carry it into the car they came in.

Next day the same person had it on MP for £350 and it appeared to sell very quickly.

Maybe I was a mug, good on them etc but morally I felt a bit betrayed. It would appear an act of kindness is exploited by some.

Oh well, it's only a washer etc but I'd rather have helped someone in genuine need!

Maybe they were in genuine need, but of cash more than a washer. Console yourself with that hehe

I’d be sorely tempted to up the price for them since they have guaranteed income throughout this “challenging period”

When I receive a "is this still available" comment I tend to filter them out as I've never had a solid follow up from this type of enquiry.

We have a benefit brigade 4 kids never worked lot in our village

They are the kings of the local Facebook sites, on all day, always in the thick of it

They are sods for jumping on any freebie as soon as it emerges, then ends up on Facebook or gumtree for sale. As a benefit top up it must be a nice little extra income, all local. I’m amazed people give their stuff to them, but it saves a trip to the tip I guess

Ive got a mountain bike cluttering up my office that I could really be doing with having gone... after trying to sell a year old Peogot 208 on there a couple of years ago I'm not looking forward to listing it.

I'm thinking about just listing it for a bit less than its worth and "NO OFFERS".

That didn't help with said 208 though biggrin

I always write a proper enquiry and finish it with my name and phone number, I think it marks you as someone who isn't just randomly clicking everything.

Worst thing I ever tried to sell on there were mountain bikes - hells teeth! Hundreds and hundreds of "still available" "best offer" etc etc. Inundated, never got a followup. Bizarrely about 95% Asians confused In the end I just filtered on name.

Uber eats/delivery riders?

I feel theres a whole mindset in general where people just want to click a button and things arrive. When it comes to buying from another person, and not a shop, they struggle. At times, talking themselves out of a bargain.

I think some Asians saw it as a business opportunity and bought any bikes that seemed cheap without knowing much about them. There were quite a few 10-20 year old 26" mountain bikes, worth £100 or so, up for 3-4 times that. Quite funny seeing the comments from those in the know.

Sold quite a bit through marketplace recently, mostly without any problem. I have started countering the 'best price' brigade with a 'Whats your best price?'. They don't seem to get that and mostly don't reply.

We are helping to clear a deceased neighbours property, his neice has inherited it and lives on the isle of wight and we are in bedfordshire so it’s difficult for her , my mrs resonded to a “ need everything for my new flat , cheap or free please “ posts , seemed dead keen just didn’t bother turning up! No apology , no excuses just radio silence . Shame as some of the free stuff she could have had is avtually worth something. The scummers spoil it for everybody else .

I sold a couple of parts on a Mini group without any hassle whatsoever but I listed a car battery on a couple of local selling groups and I've had nothing but morons contact me.
Is it any good ? No it's fked obviously
Will it fit my car ? How do I know, I don't know what car you've got and my name isn't Halfords
And the old classic will you deliver ? Do I look like a fking postman !
I've removed it from sale, it's not worth the hassle

I just put a mountain bike on this morning.

First message was obviously a scam so that’s blocked. Couldn’t pick it up himself as he’d just had heart surgery so was sending a courier and paying by PayPal. No thanks.

if this was something anonymous like gumtree I’d be tempted to add an A to your address and then say yeah got payment come and collect. If everyone did that they’d soon get bored

Would be interesting to look out and see what bottom feeder it was

Wife finally got a new car, so I was looking at options for selling her old battered but reliable runaround. Gumtree.. Idiots and fees, ebay... Fees.. Let's try Facebook marketplace, no fees probably lots of idiots.

Honest advert loads of photos, no offers

In the five hours the advert was live...
16 people messaged
14 opening with the standard is this still available
12 what's your best price / or stupid offers
1 offering to pay with euros
1 PlayStation offer
1 person saying they'll collect it on a tow truck and take it back to London.. On a 300 quid car really??
1 torrent of abuse for not replying within 5 minutes
1 person who viewed, liked the car but couldn't afford the insurance.

There was a strong correlation between unusual names and stupidity of requests. That's a cultural gap I'm not willing to cross for a cheap car

I've put it on ebay instead, fees are worth it!
