Being Gazumped

I hope Mr Vendor that your future purchase falls through and you have to ring up your wife and hear her cry when you tell her.
I hope the new buyer screws up and lets you down

Sometimes they get their comeuppance. It happened to us when my wife needed to move urgently due to already having started a new job. We knocked £20k off our house to secure an offer from a first time buyer (to keep the chain short).

We had an offer £5k below asking price accepted on a nice house with plenty of space. A day later a mysterious "other buyer" who had been "waiting in the wings" dropped an offer £5k over the asking price. Mr (and/or Mrs) Vendor apparently accepted that offer. Two days later we get a call telling us that they were "sorry to have done that to you, we're feeling bad - please have it for what you originally offered". Well, erm??? No, actually.

No sooner had we gotten gazumped, we moved to our second choice house (three shortlisted) and had an offer accepted. So we told our erstwhile gazumpers what we'd told them in the first place - that we were serious buyers on a mission to get a suitable house bought as soon as practicably possible, and that we were in no mood for messing people about, and very definitely not willing to be messed about ourselves. We're in the second choice house now, with the one we were gazumped on about 500 yards away as the crow flies. It's still on the market, still with the same car and caravan sat outside, and the price has dropped below what we had offered.

And it might sound like we've cut off our noses to spite our faces by flouncing and buying a smaller house in poorer condition, but this one has great neighbours and potential to extend if we want/need to. The other one was already extended, and because it's on a bend in the road, was isolated from all it's neighbours save for the one next door. Our neighbours in the "inferior" house are all fabulous, really really friendly and helpful. And although we're spending tens of thousands getting it really nice, we at least had a small surplus from the sale to pay for works, and it will be to our taste rather than what the previous owner decided to do.

The vendors of the "nicer" house had said they needed to move because they had a bungalow lined up to buy to retire into. They may have lost that now, but I'll probably never know. For us, location (in relation to my wife's job) was always more important than a particular size or style of house. And the new one is coming together nicely. Oak internal doors are next on the list of works to accept a quote on.

All I can say is "best of luck with the ongoing search" really. I hope you find what you want and get a move all sorted sooner rather than later. This moving lark ain't easy when it goes smoothly, so getting messed about by smart-arsed vendors really leaves a sour taste.

Oh, and we got friendly with the selling agent too. He told us that, reading between the lines, the gazumping buyer had told porkies to his mortgage provider, and been found out, which was what led to the swift demise of their deal.

I am getting annoyed with these hire bikes that keep popping up in London. Like the Boris bikes but they don't have a docking station, you just leave them wherever you like and they lock. The next person unlocks them with an app.

They have become such a problem in some areas in China that they can’t get rid of them quicker than they get replaced. There are now huge bike graveyards and no signs of slowing down.

You see a lot of ex-Ofo bikes here in Cambridge, with the locks smashed off.

It’s odd, the app has been available for ages but somehow seems to be this weeks thing.

Yes, it did, and a couple of years ago it was popular because of a different filter you could apply, I forget what.

Now they've added the "old" filter and its popular again, no doubt a couple of high-profile stars have boosted it again.

For the record, it appears that when I am old, I will look like Father Christmas

I have not tried it, there are a couple of rumours that it keeps a copy of the photo you use, the other rumour is that it gains access to all the photos on your phone.

They've started appearing in Bournemouth now. Green bikes with an odd-looking frame. Not in huge numbers, but there was a "parking area" for them painted on a pavement in Boscombe (I think) and I spotted one being ridden near Hengistbury Head, and two more just randomly "parked" on corners of residential streets. I don't think it will be too long before they start needing to be fished out of the Stour or the sea. Or someone who owns a van will get fed up with them and dump them hundreds of miles away. Easy done too, even when they're locked they aren't locked to anything so they can be lifted and shifted easily.

They're like shopping trolleys. Great in the right place, such as Homebase*. But absolutely no use to anyone dumped two miles from the nearest Homebase*. And so it is with these bikes. Great on the seafront, or in town, perhaps near a railway station. But useless once they've been ridden home by someone because they'll be miles from where they're likely to find another person who wants/needs to use one. No bloody use at all if you need to walk two miles in the wrong direction to find one, then cycle the four miles to where you want to go. You may as well walk to your destination in the first place. They'll either need to be as ubiquitous as 'Boris' bikes, or they won't have any effect on the environment and congestion levels.

They'll actually have a negative impact on the environment, due to the vans having to be driven round to collect them from where they've been dumped

Reading BC stopped their bike program a few months back... not sure exactly why but probably because no-one was using them. As such we've got a bunch of abandoned bike racks that are just taking up space in public areas. I suppose they'll be torn out and replaced at the speed of government.

It will gain access to all of your photos if you click to allow access to all of your photos!
If you just take a photo and use that then yes it could keep a copy. There’s probably something in t&c’s about allowing unlimited use/ownership too.

Exactly this really. I'm a regular cyclist, so don't really need to hire one. But as far as I can see, unless they are many and widespread enough to not need vans driving them around to where they are needed, their effect will either be negative or negligible at best. But if there were enough of them to be available in all places at all times, there'd be so many of them that the streets would be clogged. So despite them getting a few more bums out of cars and onto bikes (which I believe is a net "good thing"), I also think that they are a big white elephant in real, practical terms. The last thing we need is pedestrians having to walk in the carriageway because the footway is clogged with what effectively amounts to so much scrap iron. And it's all very well saying peds can "move them so there's space to pass", but what about the blind, or mobility impaired? It's bad enough already with selfish drivers parking on footways, without adding to street clutter with bikes that spend a tiny percentage of their time actually being ridden. All very well in London, but even there the scheme employs staff in vans to drive around spreading the fleet back out to maintain availability in popular areas at peak times.

I know it's an attempt to improve things, but I can't see it working unless there is a sea-change in the way the British public view the bicycle as a primary means of personal transportation...

Impressive, a veritable Oscar Wilde in our midst, or do you have some saucy snaps of Ken in compromising
situations ?
Yes, I'd say so. There was at least one occasion when he read out three of my emails in a week.

...and then presumably have to have people driving around in vans to change the batteries? Surely dockless makes even less sense for e-bikes than conventional ones. they've started a scheme around here with electric scooters and I seem them parked up all over the place, but I have no idea what they do about charging them.

That article is dated 6 Dec 2018 and states there would be 1000 of the bikes around by the end of the year (2018 ?). Has that happened ?
