1. The BBC show Wanted Down Under, absolutely awful.

2. The fact someone had changed the channel on the TV at work from Sky Sports News to BBC One.

. However were a famous footballist or Cricketist were to suddenly pass, I'd be the first to realise that my ignorance of these people is not something to celebrate.
Odd thing to say. I saw the news and heard the name last night, but it rang no bells. This sad death of someone involved in a minority sport in this country does seem to have been very widely reported. I wonder why.
All that fuss on BBC News about Kobe Bryant.
Like Harvey Enna, that name means nothing to me.

The simple things, spending time alone doing something relaxing with the few people I care about.

The time in between (90% of my life) is absolute bobbins.
Ah! Then you need the PH Needlework Thread.

Because Bryant was a huge name worldwide. More people in the world would recognise Kobe Bryant than Wayne Rooney. Rooney isn't even well known in football mad places like South America.

It's like being ignorant of Beckham, but that isn't what annoys me... It's the fact some are incredibly proud of their ignorance.

It's the kind of ignorance we often lambaste the Americans for displaying. I think it's a good thing Bryant's death is getting this kind of coverage even though basketball isn't that popular in the UK.

I'd never heard of him before, but I'm neither proud nor repentant for that ignorance. As others have said, I'm sad for the loss of life and the human tragedy, but I don't feel particularly guilty for not having heard of him before. But, equally, I'm never proud to be ignorant either, so I do get where you are coming from.

But most people on here are Brits, so how famous people are globally isn't really relevant compared to how famous they are locally. I have no interest in football but have heard of Beckham as you can't avoid football in the UK and footballers are headline items in news articles. Basketball isn't anywhere near as big in the UK, and the top players in the world won't get anywhere near as much media coverage in the UK as football players.
I'm amazed so many people seem to find it surprising that people hadn't heard of him.

I suspect most Americans have never heard of Sachin Tendulkar but I bet he's a lot more famous in many parts of the world than either footballers or baseball players.

and virtually everyone ever, ringing in to speak on the radio. especially people "shouting out" on popmaster to "all who know me".

we don't care, we just want to play the quiz as we drive along. I don't care you've been operating a lathe for 30 years and yr wife is called cindy and you've a dog and you support the football.................................
I have tried to get this post in English, but the 'translate' function doesn't recognise the language.

Can anyone help me?

Does anyone have any idea at all what he is talking about?
I'm annoyed by people posting on PH, attempting to be clever by correcting grammar and general literacy.

Of course, every post on the internet is naturally supposed to perfectly correct. As oppose to people throwing a few random comments out, which may have been posted on a phone/tablet/work and thus do not necessarily need to be perfect, given the multiple ways text may have been input.

However, you carry on if it makes you win internet points with yourself.

Obviously not as not many people on this thread knew who he was. Certain people are splashed all over the papers on a regular basis, hell Beckham plays with lego and its newsworthy, however I have never seen him play football as im not interested in football. I don't watch basketball and as Bryant isn't splashed over the paper on a regular basis I didn't know who he was. I am not proud of not knowing who he was its just a fact, there are probably thousands of famous people in their own fields that you don't know, because you don't follow that sport.

Here is a test name me one current top fuel or funny car driver without looking it up.

See, this isn't helping at all. I'm quite familiar with the work of Midge Ure and Ultravox, but now i'm even more annoyed (at myself) for not 'getting' the joke in the first place. In fact, you explaining it in such straight-forward, non judgemental terms annoys me more than if you'd wound me up over it and delivered me a parrot! hehe

Anyway. Annoying me right now is the latest in a long string of calls to my home from "Virgin Media".

Hello?

"Oh, Hi. This is Eve calling from Virgin Media. I'm looking to speak to the account holder, Mrs YJ..."

[rolls eyes rolleyes - not this bloody nonsense again]

I'm afraid she's at work.

"Oh, OK. The reason I am calling is to discuss some changes to the account..."

At which point I got fed up with the farce of pretending I don't know it's a scam, and say "...hmmmm? Interesting. I've just told you i'm not the account holder, you have no idea of my relationship, or otherwise, to mrs YJ, yet straight away you launch into discussing the details of her account with a person unknown in clear breach of data protection guidelines..."

"OK, thank you, goodbye" [Click]

Who falls for this ballcocks anyway? Virgin Media are about as likely to call out of the blue as Microsoft are. In fact, if I called Virgin Media myself i'd have to wade through layers of automated garbage options to get anywhere near speaking to a real person. And if it really were Virgin media calling then I'm pretty sure they'd have tried to use the primary means of us managing our account and paying our bills - their own bloody website, ffs. And the otherwise pleasant female-sounding voice on the other end of the line? She's as likely to be called "Eve" in real life as I am to have been christened King K'inich Popol Hol of Copán...

Yet you feel the need to use the childishly, cringeworthy expressions 'footballist' and 'cricketist' which are themselves examples of wilful ignorance.

It's a play on words. "Harvey Enna" sounds like "Ahhh Vienna"

Unless Don Garlitts or Shirley Muldowney are still in the game then no.

Now, who was the captain of the winning team in last year's Camanachd Cup?

Exactly, if someone does not follow a sport they probably don't know the people who play it at a high level. I could not name a single baseball player or Australian rules football player

I always let them talk for a bit then am extremely rude to them. Remember, these people are criminals and scammers and will think nothing of emptying your bank account so they deserve no respect. (Not to be confused with legitimate cold-callers who I'm polite to because whilst annoying they're only doing a job)

My method was to string them along if I had nothing better to do. My record was one of those 'your Microsoft computer is sending error messages' buffoons - I strung him along for nearly 40 minutes even though I had no computer in my barrack room. I did it partly because i reasoned that if he were talking to someone who knew he was a scammer that he couldn't also call someone who might fall for it, and partly because I was excessively bored waiting for my pager to go off and I was stuck in barracks anyway. It was quite fun "going through the various steps" of getting the computer sorted before this bell-end twigged that I didn't actually have a computer where I was.
