Car-centric tosh, although I think that's a fact rather than an unpopular opinion.

Thank you. I love when this site gives me a good laugh.

@valiant, I’m fully in agreement.

I’ve had an in-laws house requisitioned to make way for a road. I’ve no problem with that. It did annoy me how long it took to be paid for but the bureaucracy is inefficient.

I think that vital infrastructure like roads, rails, airports, power stations etc should just be built and locals should be ignored. Fair enough to pay them out if their home has to be demolished but everyone else should be told to lump it, it’s happening, accept it. It’s for the greater good.

Case in point, HS2 is spending billions extra just to put part of the route in tunnels in the Chilterns that previously was planned to be overground. You want it in tunnels? Your council tax bill will now be 1000% more to help pay for it.
I totally agree. Some of what goes on is complete insanity.

Rant time!

I live near Norwich. In simplistic terms you have the A47 dual carriage way going around the South side of the city. Recently they built the Northern Distributor Road (NDR) to go around the North side. Now you would think that this would brilliant as it would connect to the A47 making a full dual carriageway around the city making life much easier for everyone in the area to get around without having to go into the inner ring road or through the centre.

You would be correct on the East side but they haven’t on the west side because since before I was born there have been people opposing it for ecological reasons. Such as a rare Newt. So there is a roughly 4 mile gap between the NDR and A47. Which would be fine if it simply went down to good bit of single carriage way, it goes to 1.5 car wide lanes with passing points. For me to go to the hospital on the West side of the city it’s faster and less stressful to head East on the NDR and round the A47 on the South side all the way round.

It’s simply beyond me how someone hasn’t just said fk it. This will make thousands of people’s lives easier every day and probably be greener in terms of miles driven. We are building it where it has to go.

I may be grumpier than usual about this as my son was born Wednesday, my wife and son have been kept in so I’m doing the journey a lot. Made the mistake of kidding myself the shorter distance around the west side would be better this morning………. It wasn’t laugh

Congratulations.

I don’t know those specific roads but agree with the sentiment. I’m not a ste. I listen to the concerns around wildlife and migratory birds etc. but I often think they’re just excuses made by land owners who don’t really care but have found an excuse to use.

Having travelled that way prior to the building of the Southern Bypass around Norwich, i can concur that it is quite possible the greatest thing to happen to Norwich because the traffic used to be horrific before hand and especially if it was a nice day and people were flocking to the coast.

Its been going on so long now that there are rumours that some of what has been found was actually put there by parties that don't want it built. They have done multiple ecological reports they keep finding new things to cause problems which restart the whole process. This is of course just rumour but wouldn't entirely shock me.

It kind of ties in with one of my other opinions. In the UK its pretty widely agreed that we need to build more houses particularly affordable houses for the young starting out. Yet the opposition when large housing developments are proposed will be vicious from the locals. As they don't want house building in their area.

Leading me to the conclusion that we are all in favour of house building just as long as its no where near any of us. laugh

it's not as simple as that though. My local town is scheduled to have nearly 4,000 houses built (and I'll agree that some provision for affordable housing is needed). However.... (you just knew that there was going to be that caveat didn't you!) the town is, nearly, gridlocked at rush hour; the schools are all over full; the doctors and dental surgeries are rammed; there's very little parking available in the high street; the train (and station car-park) is overflowing; the road surface is in a dreadful state of repair.

All the developer wants to do is dump 4,000 boxes on greenfields and then bugger off; no infrastructure improvement; no surgeries; etc. Faced with this sort of issue is there any wonder people become 'nimbys'?

Apparently it is a unpopular opinion to not want my local council to be on the hook for the rent on 1300 flats, priced 20% above market rate and set increases by inflation for the next 55 years, all to 'save' a football club.

Well, I'm a huge supporter of my local football club and I wouldn't want the local council to commit to anything financially to save them either. Granting planning permissions and the such like for redevelopment or expansion is fine, but I would say if my club is in financial difficulties it's up to me and the other supporters to dig deep, not the local population at large.

No.
Those are all typically someone's business, going somewhere like a park, nature reserve or beach where parking is free and there are no commercial facilities like a cafe trying to sell you something is probably way less than 1% of traffic.

Fine, on that basis the businesses should be the ones to pay for them and those of us who only drive occasionally should continue to do so for free, without paying road tax, ulez or tolls.

Great suggestion, thanks! thumbup

Seriously, there should be an 'off peak' road tax option for those of us who only use main routes in the evening or at weekends. smile
