Mind you it could be a bitsa or home modified jobbie, it's very easy to er... 'build' a Mk1 Cooper S...!
Are Mk1 shells available now?

I've seen several "Mk2 Cooper S" with concealed hinges and wind-up windows.

The Horror. The Horror.

Heritage now do a Mk1 shell but it has some cross pollination here and there with generic features, a few people I know who've seen one say it's 'not all that' but with some fettling it can be a good place to start. It's far easier to take a Mk1 850 and turn it into a Cooper lookalike or take a Cooper and spec it up to be a Cooper S, in which case the log book will still tell you what it really is. The problem is that from the late '80s onwards when the Mini cult really took off a lot of Mk1 and Mk2 Coopers have been built up from kosher log books using 850 shells, plus back in the '60s with handwritten log books it was easy to just add an 'S' onto a genuine Cooper log book and years later with the details logged onto the new DVLA computer you've magically got a Cooper S. John Parnell's bible 'Original Copper & Cooper S' is a godsend, some have said it could make it easier for the fakers but the more knowledge is out there the better for everyone.

I've lost count of the number of Mk1 and Mk2 Coopers I've seen in Mk3 onwards shells! To be fair though, some of these were reshelled in the early '70s when nobody cared about originality. The easiest one to fake is the Mk3 Cooper S as it doesn't look much different to a bog standard Mk3 850 or 1000, the only obvious external clues being the twin tanks and the badge on the bootlid. Only 1570 were built between March '70 and June '71 and most have been accounted for which helps keep the fakers at bay. The first and last built are both still around. Lots of giveaways under the skin though, if you know what to look for, inside, outside and underneath. My Mk2 S was reshelled into a pukka period shell almost thirty years ago (complete with the tell tail factory fitted right hand tank mounting bracket on the rear bulkhead which is hidden by the seat squab and pretty much impossible to fake) and has plenty of history so I know it's a good 'un.

This Mini lark is incurable!

Ah spose the other thing working in favour of the fakers is the Cooper S's bits and bobs being added or modded by Special Tuning in a shed in Abingdon and looking decidedly homespun even when new.

Still! It's a very nice part of the world. Hotel on the quayside?
Inn just in the Main Street, just a cream tea at the hotel as it’s a bit of a gin palace.

I've gotten as far as I'm going to tonight, it's a mammoth build with lots of detail, a couple of pics to show the level of detail!!!!

Seriously fascinating stuff there P5B, I really didn't know there was so much stuff to look out for, or just how few were actually built!!!

Goblin works garage ,awful car tv prog ,bought a Mini Clubman shell in this week's ,recorded ages ago ,episode.

cost them 7000 pounds ,or 7500 ,forgot.

And then proceeded to build a horrible thing and use almost nothing of the 1275 GT they bought as donor.

Morning all, Eric the old hedgehog's been at the door again. Lovely little chap he is, surprising the amount of noise he makes.

I've given him some water and a bit of chicken cat food stuff, he seems to be enjoying it.

I'm going to do some scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for breakfast. See if that gets a Nom out of Claire.

If you think Eric makes a lot of noise, just be glad that Spiny Norman isn't calling on you! yikes

I'm off to Oulton Park today for the Gold Cup Meeting.
I gave Percy a thorough going over yesterday so he's looking his best for the infield display.
We usually get around 25 to 30 TVRs attending and we have a good place to spectate overlooking Clay Hill with views of the track from Cascades to Knicker Brook.
Should be a perfect day weatherwise, I've packed some Factor 30 for my nipples, and a large knotted hanky.

Looking forward to seeing some exciting racing.

Whatever all you Trivialites have planned to do today, I hope you have a marvellous time. thumbup

Morning old chap, sounds like the makings of a good day there. Hope you have a great time, the knotted hanky will be a must though.

Battert's wearing one this morning. Part of the PPE thing now when he's using the chainsaw, apparently.

For what it's worth old boy, I had a terrible cold some years ago. Hung around for ages it did, couldn't get rid.

My old dad told me to have some hot milk with a good drop of Whisky in it. Not the most appetizing thing, sweated like a pig on a spit overnight. It cured me though.

I'll try to get a photo of the hedgehog later. He doesn't seem to be about much during the day, I'll see if he makes an appearance this evening.
