'The ladies of XXXX' sounds way more interesting than anything that ever pops up on our local FB.
You change your mind when you see the ladies. My wife excluded of course .

I've just been blocked from my local village group.

Someone posted a scare-monger story about their 11 year old being 'called over' by 'balding men in hi-vis jackets'. Apparently, the police told them to 'share it on social media'.

There was no contact between child and men. Nobody else actually saw the incident, so it's completely uncorroborated.

Earlier today, there was a post about 'a man in an 06 plate black Fiesta' following children and a few weeks back there was a mass 'paedo hunt' going on when a girl went 'missing' - turns out that she'd gone somewhere with a half brother.

I pointed out that getting out the pitch forks like this wasn't helping and that the world wasn't a 'scary place' any more than it was 20 or 30 years ago. I did point out that these kind of scare stories being spread on social media don't help anyone - and that I felt sorry for any men in hi-vis jackets in the village tomorrow morning, suffering disparaging looks and being subject of unfounded gossip at the school gates... and got blocked from the group!

Hopefully it ends at just being blocked and doesn't continue with " bet he is a bit iffy" type posts afterwards

my favourites are the nosey cows who, whenever there's been a traffic accident, chip in with "hope everyones ok xx" when in reality they should be typing "did anyone die in an horrific manner?"

I banned myself from a local group after I forgot I wasn't on PH and posted a pretty harsh response to some whingers.

I live by the sea and their complaint centred around the noise an RAF rescue helicopter made one night while engaged in a search and rescue operation.

As I say, I am so used to not holding back on PH and there being a swear filter that my response in defence of the RAF was to say the least inappropriate.

I left the group but checked back in to find some very upset old dears but one or two supporters.

I find myself thinking "hang on this isn't PH" when being about to say something robust on Facebook. hehe

Normally followed milliseconds later by someone demanding that speed cameras are installed...

In a subcategory of local groups, my son has just started primary school, lovely little local school of reasonably well off middle-class types, all very normal.

Such are modern times there’s the ‘Parents of XXX School Reception class’ group which I’ve been invited to join, immediately there was an invite to join the Dad’s five-a-side team, all very genial and nice.

Two weeks in a new kid has joined the school. The mum did an intro that contained a few more typos than you’d normally expect, a quick drill down into her (wide-open) FaceyB page shows four kids by three different dads, multiple posts ranting about absent deadbeat dads, complaints about the Police, Social Services, the CSA and any other ‘agency’ you can think of, sexually provocative photos, more rants, lots of cringeworthy meme photos about being true to yourself, living your best life, all the usual U OK Hun drivel, a spectacular social media car crash. She turned up at school drop-off yesterday in skanky, stained sweatpants and slippers, smoking a fag like Waynetta Slob, whilst all the other mums stood around in their expensive Sweaty Betty gym wear, I did have to chuckle.

Her daughter seems quite sweet but I’m now dreading an invitation to a play date!!

I wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions. The dolled up mums tend to be far more judgemental and happy to stab you in the back when you least expect it.

Oh, I don't know. You could get yourself a bit of council filth whilst the kids are playing!

I was a member of one of my towns local groups . I had a rant one day about the driving standards of the mums on the school runs . World war three ensued, the abuse and threats that I had was epic . I did wind a few of the worst ones up then left the group and blocked them . A couple of weeks later Facebook closed them down .
The only local group that I am on these days is a local history group , they are very civilised, helpful and pretty well informed . They have prompted me to take a real interest especially in the history of smuggling and shipwrecks .

I dipped back into our group - I can still see what's going on, if not post there.

Unbelievably, there have been more posts along the lines of 'saw a couple of men matching description on xxx road today - sharing for awareness' and followed up by 'scary world' type posts.

Honestly, any middle aged bloke in a hi-vis is know being looked at as a suspected paedo.

I feel for the local paediatric GP, they'll be outside his house with pitchforks and burning torches by the end of the week.

I’m not on FB, but the wife is

Our village main road is currently one way due to some hole digging. The locals forget that people following sat nav might be stumbling across our crappy village for the first time so don’t about the road being shut and getting all irate and ranty, posting the rules of the road closure

It’s as if they think that people will check each local Facebook group for any small village they will be passing through

I swear half the people on there never venture further than the corner shop

I don't really go on FB anymore, but I fired up our local group just to see what it was like, and was actually pleasantly surprised.

Probably about half of it is nice photos taken nearby, old vs new photos of the town etc.

The usual lost dog/cat/key/wallet/husband type stuff.

Notifications about upcoming roadworks that people may not have seen.

One post trying to find the name of the girl who stopped and helped her husband after he had a nasty crash so they could thank her properly.

In about 15-20 posts I think i saw 2 ones moaning about speeding/youths, so not too bad in all.

There used to be a few people who would post videos from their smart doorbell of young louts trying their car door in case it was unlocked, and expecting the police to do something about it (because a 480p video from a fking doorbell is definitely good enough quality to identify a hooded youth, unless they were expecting the police to camp out near their house on the off chance they do it again?), but I didn't see any of those thankfully.

8/10, would read again.

That’s pretty heartwarming, you must live in a nice area. Perhaps there should be a local Facebook group index on rightmove to help people judge how pleasant it is and judge the social cohesion. hehe
