I don't really go on FB anymore, but I fired up our local group just to see what it was like, and was actually pleasantly surprised.

Probably about half of it is nice photos taken nearby, old vs new photos of the town etc.

The usual lost dog/cat/key/wallet/husband type stuff.

Notifications about upcoming roadworks that people may not have seen.

One post trying to find the name of the girl who stopped and helped her husband after he had a nasty crash so they could thank her properly.

In about 15-20 posts I think i saw 2 ones moaning about speeding/youths, so not too bad in all.

There used to be a few people who would post videos from their smart doorbell of young louts trying their car door in case it was unlocked, and expecting the police to do something about it (because a 480p video from a fking doorbell is definitely good enough quality to identify a hooded youth, unless they were expecting the police to camp out near their house on the off chance they do it again?), but I didn't see any of those thankfully.

8/10, would read again.
Sounds like our FB group. You get the odd ones on there that moan about pointless stuff, but most of the time its really handy. Seems alot of the local trades must get a lot of business that way going by the number of recommendations.

Sadly the local group of "Memories of..." page is becoming a greater number of people moaning about new houses and so forth, despite the fact that about 80% of the posts are actually very good, some people clearly were avid photographers of the mundane even in a time of film being an expensive and time consuming process to live with. One chap put up a really good photo album that he had done for his schoolwork back in 1999/2000, so about the time that I was a teenager and spent loads of time just "in town" with mates etc.

I was surprised at a) how much I had forgotten about what used to be there in terms of shops, places that have been torn down and replaced etc, and b) how negative some people can be that apparently 20 years ago isn't good enough for them in terms of history.

Usually full of warnings about Eastern European men in a white van who spoke to the poster's children, or the man in the white cap driving up and down the road leaving bottles on peoples doorsteps.

We have a local residents FB page on my large new build estate. It's great for discovering many things:

1. People don't pick up after their dogs have emptied themselves
2. Kids are being mean to other kids at the park so it's a good forum for parents to be invited to come around for a talk
3. Various systems to deter cats from crapping in gardens
4. Dodgy looking vans are driving around
5. Cars are being parked in a way that would stop emergency service vehicles getting through
6. Driver shaming E.g. (whoever is driving the dark *BMW* *Audi* delete as appropriate) thanks for racing past the parked cars and not stopping causing me to brake.

Oh and it's a great place for people to advertise their small businesses. There's been some lovely rants about parking in front of others houses that have led to threats and arguments. I don't live on a Shameless type estate either!

It all just makes me want to join the PH powerfully built director types and buy a luxury country pad away from people.

I'm in a couple - although I di have them muted from my newsfeed.

The buy/sell/swap groups can be really good for sourcing kids clothes, and groups set up for hobbies as mentioned, are very useful, but our local neighbourhood watch group is comedy gold.

"I saw a scruffy man in white van driving slowly down the street, then went up to somebody's door, then ran back to his van" - appears every few days. And every few days they are reminded that it is likely an Amazon delivery.

"I saw a gang of kids walking past our house just before 4pm, they seem to do it every day - be careful out there" - You live next to school you daft old bat.

"There is a man who lives on our road and he has a new car every few weeks, should I report him to the police for drug dealing?".... Which actually turned out to be me!

It is genuinely the most baffling part of local Facebookery for me.

The best one lately....

"Which pub/restaurant would you recommend for a meal out for 6 people, either in town or nearby?"

Within town, TripAdvisor has 193 restaurants listed, but without specifically qualifying what "Nearby" means, I think we could easily hit 1,000 places within 20 minutes drive from town.

Probably every single one of them got listed and I still reckon they will have ended up choosing the local ASK Italian or Bills.

He could be a car dealer, lease car, mechanic troubleshooting, vehicle delivery person etc etc etc

But no, DRUG DEALER (and by default probably a pedo)!!!1one

Same stuff on our local chat, first one I remember: "Where can I get cheap pot noodles?" Jesus, are there expensive ones? Sell your bloody phone/computer and buy food if you're that hard up FFS.

However, this got me a LOT of 'publicity' hehe. Feel free to try to beat my reply count of 331!

"WTF is it with some dog owners? It's hot outside so many of us sleep with the windows open and yet late at night and early in the morning I hear their stupid animals barking. Can't they control the stupid animals or do they think it's fine or simply just don't care. And why are they mostly embarrassing little yappy dogs??"

The comments were utterly predicatable with some 'in post' arguments too.
You’re local to me based on your user name, disappointed to have missed the pot noodle crisis.

As well as the local” Facebook pages, police pages are great as well. Every so often, my force will post stuff about Court results, wanted people, missing from home appeals, found property, road closures, escapees from the local open prison, etc.

You can almost guarantee, whatever the actual post, there will be replies along the lines of:

  • I got done for 31 in a 30;
  • Bring back the death penalty;
  • I got done for 31 in a 30 but the police didn’t arrive for 14 seconds after I was assaulted/robbed/burgled/murdered;
  • I saw a police officer eating/drinking/smiling/breathing, “im definately discustard, I pay there wages”;
  • I got done for 31 in a 30;
  • I want a speed camera at...;
  • I got done for 31 in a 30;
  • I’m fed up of people speeding/parking/cycling/walking on “my” road;
  • I got done for 31 in a 30;
  • They should be “sent back”;
  • I got done for 31 in a 30;
  • “Shared” New Zealand/South Africa/Vanuatu “coz u neva no”;
  • I got done for 31 in a 30
  • Why didn’t the police send them to prison for longer?
  • I got done for 31 in a 30;
  • Within ten seconds of a road closure for a multiple fatal RTA, why haven’t they got police at every single junction to sort the diversions out?
  • I got done for 31 in a 30;
  • Why did the police put a murderer/rapist/drug dealer in an open prison anyway?
  • I got done for 31 in a 30...

The Mrs got binned from our local FB group for complaining about fly tipping by "chavellers"

It wasn't the original complaint it was her explaining when asked who she meant by "chavellers"

Someone lost their lovely terrier in a park, everyone was posting and reposting. Poor owner found it in the lake, saddened my day somewhat.

There was a 50 post argument a few weeks back on a local group over a lost dog - and whether the OP should have included a picture of said dog because of privacy concerns.
When asked what these privacy concerns were, various people, in all seriousness suggested that the dog didn't consent to having it's picture taken....

Bear in mind I live in the same area where Majid Majid the baseball-cap-wearing-trendy-mayor-of-Sheffield was a councillor for the Green Party, so you can imagine the type of totally "woke" idiots that are here.

There should be something put in place after these landmark cases so as not to enable idiots.

Drama alert!

We had a ranty post on our village page tonight, sounds like somebody has been "moderated" and doesn't like it so they've set up a splinter page. That'll be the third page that's been made since I moved into the village 18 months ago hehe

We had similar, with some users complaining that we 'censored' the group too much.

They set up a second group with the claim that "anything goes".

within a month they'd had a warning from facebook that the group may be shut down due to hate speech and they ended up using approvals for both members AND posts
