I get it OP, will also lurk for a while to see what i can help with but in general i don't have anything special to offer. 20 years in IT and more recently in data centres and a good understanding of technology in the home and office can be valuable to someone though.

Anyone needs any help with anything like that then i'm Central Belt in Scotland based.

OP - you're too far away from me however perhaps some good, unbiased advise is something you could offer?

I have a 2008 7 series with tan leather and i love the car very much. It's in good need of a decent clean and feed however i'm paranoid about damaging the leather or removing the colour with the vast array of products on the market.

How would you approach getting the leather back to looking and feeling tip top?

I need a path building.

I am rubbish at DIY, but I'm happy to come and put some shelves up for you. They will fall down, but I'll have paid it forward. hehe

In all seriousness, this isn't going to work. Whenever I help people I don't want or need anything in return. To have a 'i need to help someone now that someone has helped me" thing hanging over you isn't ideal. What if you can't help someone, or that you agree to help someone then have to back out? There also seems to be no limit on what the help could be, such as the house rewire post from earlier.

It's a nice idea but flawed based on having to owe someone a favour.
You don't pay it back to the person who helped you.
The idea is that you help someone else in trouble.
Yes, I know. The owing some one else a favour still applies. You just owe someone else.

What if people ask for help but you can't help, and then spend the rest of time owing a favour to someone, anyone? Will you get called out on it etc?

Nah, not for me, I'm happy to help people when I can, but not to then expect that person to do something for someone else.

While not a leather expert, I used autoglym leather cleaner and then used autoglym leather care balm. Leather came of nice and matte, which is what was expected.

Live on south coast
Gas engineer/heating/plumbing professional

Love the idea of paying it forward, once helped a guy in deepest somerset who got a puncture on a terribly narrow country lane, had a spare but no jack, helped him change it there and then.. tried to offer money, and refused.
I said one day if you see someone in need of help you know what to do.

This is a brilliant idea and makes the world go round, restoring faith in humanity in many minds.

In the spirit of this thread, I'm an amateur with Excel formulas, while I can't redesign a budgeting forecast I might be able to help with colour coding and IF statements. Happy to help with my limited knowledge.

Also this weekend I'm driving from Heathrow to Wimbledon. Anybody needs something moved Saturday afternoon in that area, let me know.

bugger, doable, I meant, of course.

To the poster wanting to know how to look after leather, I'll reply further in a bit. Just up, and tired!

I think it's a great idea, all those over analysing it all, stop, it's a simple idea and very easily achieved, I'm going to post this for no reason other than it's how I am, a few years back I had an escort TD estate and used to have a fixed towbar in the back, came across a young lady broken down at some lights one night on the way home, I had Mrs Bobbers in the car with me and we stopped to see if we could help, she said I just need it pushed to the side of the road, turned out she lived the road over from us so I towed her home, no drama, a couple of years later Mrs Bobbers came out of a supermarket to a flat tyre, she was trying to get the spare out when a chap spotted her and changed the tyre for her, that's how it works, if you help others I like to think that in your time of need there will be someone there to help you.

OK. It's as much about the don'ts as the do's.

Firstly, never use baby wipes, magic erasers, anything with alcohol in it (smell it) as these, with repeated use, will fubar your pigment. Always avoid anything that promotes shine/polish/gleam etc. They will contain either oils, wax or silicone to achieve this. These ingredients will simply sit on the surface of your leather, attracting crap.

As eluded above, shiny leather (a patina) is dirty leather. Clean leather should be mat and soft. If it's shiny and plasticy it is needing a clean.

Always use a PH neutral cleaner, and a protector a few times a year. Most protectors, unbelievably, don't protect from anything. I have seen this with my own eyes, a drop of oil going straight through (bare) hides, 'protected' by supposed protectors.

The products I always recommend are LTT Leather Cares. Simply, they work. And we practice what we preach, I use their stuff on our Natuzzi, Stressless and Charles Eames furniture.

Also cleaning with white kitchen roll is helpful. When the sheet used is simply wet rather than dirty wet you know no more dirt is coming off the leather.

Always try and protect leather from UV, there is not a paint/dye/pigment etc in the world that can't be bleached by the sun.

Always make sure (especially if your leather is light) that any material that comes in to contact with it is colour-fast, ESPECIALLY red, which can be nigh on impossible to remove. The same applies to wet jeans, however old. Also metal work on jeans and similar will scratch leather.

If you want to remove dents in leather, like the ones child seats cause, massage the leather whilst a hair dryer is being blown on the dent (being careful to not burn your fingers!) the fibres will gradually tighten and the dent will be gone, or much removed.

Never trust DIY kits telling you that you can colour match yourself. If we use an £8000 Photospectrometer to achieve a perfect colour match, ask yourself, will a £15 kit off ebay achieve the same result?

There endeth the lesson

That's it though without the need to publicise it in any way, altruism is its own reward.

Where you going wrong fella?

Some tips.

If you have a sister(s) female friends or colleagues then get them to go clothes/footwear/haircut shopping with you. Girls know what they think looks good on a man. Wear good shoes, women always clock them.
Be confident. If nothing else this is a must. Women can smell desperation a mile off. An EG, if you're texting a lady, leave it 20 minutes, an hour before you reply, they'll keep checking their phone.
If all else fails, when you see a girl you like in the bar, don't be afraid to say 'hi, can I just say how lovely you look tonight, may I buy you a drink'. IMO it's the ONLY chat up line which can work. If they say yes make your following chat count.
