Are you as rude in real life as you are on PH?
Discussion
I am somewhat surprised at the level of nastiness on PH. Discussions often degenerate into name calling. Lots of posts are really aggressive and many don’t display much humanity. I wonder whether it is a fair representation of the PH community or just that the rudest are the ones that post the most.
It seems like typical PH member behaviour these days and makes me click away from a lot of threads as the rude/knobbish posters just keep shouting louder and louder, it's all a bit sad and pathetic, there's no way that these people would act like this face to face but on here they are anonymous and can act like a prat as much as they like.
It's like a badge of honour for some.

I am normally polite to one and all, forums or real life. I dislike upsetting people for the fun of it intensely. However, the other day I was working on my car and a chap came up and let his dog ump up at my car three times. On the third occasion, I told him to ps off! I would do that in real life, or if someone dd the same on the forum (unlikely I grant you...) then I would say the same.
I really enjoy a lively debate/sometimes heated discussion but that doesn't seem possible here anymore as you can't simply disagree with people anymore without being called an idiot, or worse.
These days I pretty much avoid any type of online disagreement as i get a horrible feeling of dread when I come back to the forum to see how the thread is going when the name calling starts.
I think a big problem is that lots of people have no idea what its like to get a punch in the mouth

Absolutely. The written medium can be rather blunt however, I do think the intent behind some points made is not always as abrasive as the poster intended.
ETA it does seem some threads can descend into ad hominem attacks very quickly as posters try to score points rather than developing the debate. I may be guilty of the latter re scoring points at times but have certainly never needed to make it personal. Play the ball not the man or whatever it is they say...

I have always assumed that there is no anonymity on line ultimately. Thus I am not particularly rude in real life of on PH. Have generally avoided commenting on the usual political/relationship/ council/fat/speeding threads that seem to excite people.
Agreed, what you read is what you get. I know that anyone could figure out who I am and where I live based on my posts so keep my online persona true to my own. I’m a fairly blunt person in real life but not in a rude manner. More, cutting to the point. But, in written form that can appear a little rude so I try and bare that in mind.
I also don’t get involved in “fat” threads mostly because I am........fat.
Think I'm generally polite unless confronted by someone obviously trolling on here so I'd say yes, I would say the same thing in real life.
I was bought up as a CofE Christian, not that it matters in the slightest. I always thought that the 10 Commandments should be replaced by one all-encompassing rule:
Don't be a dick
That's it, and its all anyone should need.

I suspect the rudest ones are people you'd avoid if you met them in the real world. Someone in my office I can well imagine would be a great NPE troll.
If there is any current affairs discussion going on we try not to let him hear, but if he does he sort of swoops in waggling a finger and talking bks. Everyone leaves.
