Are you as rude in real life as you are on PH?

I I love the way threads like this seem to attract people who feel that they are smarter than most other PHers.
Perhaps we are.It had to be Pothole that replied...
I can't help but see you saying that as Patrick McGoohan in The Prisoner for some reason.

Its the internet, not to be taken seriously
I could post links to numerous threads about different subjects to illustrate my point, but let's go with this one -https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
And my point?
The internet isn't some fantasy land where nothing matters and nothing is to be taken seriously.
Quite the opposite actually.
Despite what you and others of the same opinion think, the internet is real life - it's just another medium. You are engaging with real people.
I see the same thing posted time and again, when someone is called out for saying something stty or acting like a dick - "calm down, it's just the internet" is often the response.
It's that same rationale that allows people to say stuff to strangers that would land them in some form of bother, if said to a stranger's face - regardless whether they're Yorkshire, London or Glasgow (to pick up on a theme I noticed developing in this thread)

I am also not influenced in any way whatsoever by advertisements or blown away by reality TV.
I obviously live in my own little bubble which suits me.
Each to their own I suppose

You might take it seriously but I don't irrespective of any links to illustrate your point.
You sound like a total dick. You might think that you're not, of course, but since it's only "the internet" and you aren't real, I guess I can say what I want about you eh? You dick.

In my defence I hadn't even clicked on the link Jimi posted so had no idea which thread he was referring to.
I don't think I'm rude on here and I'm not rude to anyone in real life either.
Admittedly I'd say my piece if needed and I'm all up for healthy debate but some posts on here are obnoxious. I don't even think being blunt is problematic on here but there is some serious nitpicking and I have seen people make a conscious effort to pick on others.
I'm sure the way some people act on here, if they did act the same way face to face it wouldn't be long before they got a smack in the mouth! haha

Actually this isn't strictly true. You are engaging with a persona. A version of a real person. It's the cloak of anonymity that fora afford that allows for this creation that we all - to one degree or another - make use of. Not only does it keep us safe when insulting others, it allows us to insult in return if we wish, whilst still remaining 'safe'. You yourself must be aware your posts could be viewed sometimes as blunt or just rude. In the presence of the person you are addressing you'd temper your language, on here people don't. For most on here posting is part of a 'performance' and they slip into character as soon as they sit in front of their monitor.I'd like to think that I act on here exactly as do offline.
If someone is being a dick and I find myself tempted to respond in kind, I tend to ask myself if I'd say whatever I'm about to say to their faces.
Most of the time I'll wind my neck in, because the answer is no, I wouldn't.
So if I'm curt or I swear at you, you've definitely pissed me off

I'd like to think the same about myself. If someone is being a dick and I find myself tempted to respond in kind, I tend to ask myself if I'd say whatever I'm about to say to their faces.

I'm sure some will disagree, but that is certainly how I strive to conduct myself online.

I'd certainly be happy for anyone I know to read anything I'd written here, including the post the overzealous mod deleted recently before excluding me from a thread.
