Are you as rude in real life as you are on PH?

A good acid test, I think, would be to ask yourself if you'd be happy for your friends, family & colleagues to read through your posting history.
My father is on here. It has a moderating effect. Mind you he's a real knob.

I'd like to think that I act on here exactly as do offline.
If someone is being a dick and I find myself tempted to respond in kind, I tend to ask myself if I'd say whatever I'm about to say to their faces.
Most of the time I'll wind my neck in, because the answer is no, I wouldn't.
So if I'm curt or I swear at you, you've definitely pissed me off
I'd like to think the same about myself. If someone is being a dick and I find myself tempted to respond in kind, I tend to ask myself if I'd say whatever I'm about to say to their faces.

I'm sure some will disagree, but that is certainly how I strive to conduct myself online.
All I said was "A good acid test, I think..."
Am I fk.
Almost nobody is. If people were as rude as they are on the internet then most of us would be brawling with strangers before we got to the end of the street.
PH (and online communication in general, to a greater or lesser degree) is a totally different kind of interaction from almost anything any of us experience regularly. If at all.
I can sit here semi drunk posting any rubbish that comes into my head. Nobody interupts, gasps, tuts, walks off or gives any of the dozens of other more subtle signals that they think you're nuts. You can finish your point entirely thinking it is perfectly coherent and logical, and take your daft idea to its logical extreme completely unchallenged. Until you get a reply.
Whoever replies, 5 minutes 10 minutes, an hour or a week later can tear the whole thing to shreds as though it's the most ludicrous and ill formed idea they have ever heard. They can highlight every slip up in spelling, grammar, punctuation and typing to compound the view that you are a blithering idiot, then bask in the warm glow of righteousness up until your response to them.
And because it's all pretty much anonymous it doesn't really matter. At worst you can create a new profile, bury your past errors and say you were right all along. Nobody will ever know. That sanctimonious speed camera enthusiast might be your cheerful next door neighbour. The communist nutjob might be Trevor from the paper shop. The richer than yow powerfully built director might be a mild mannered bloke at work. You will almost never hear an uninterrupted diatribe from these people in the way of a typical post here and they will never hear or respond to yours.
Thus you can build up quite a dislike of a person you have never met based on an interaction you would never have in any other context.
It's great!

I find that certain forums have a better class of member than others, for example, aircraft forums are a more well mannered and mature poster than a car or motorcycle site.
I also find that British sites have ruder people, whilst American sites have more arrogant types.
This is a vast generalization, as most of the time, posters are just normal folk talking.
It could also just be my impression/ interpretation.
Over the years I’ve learned to just ignore the dicks you find on forums. I deal with enough in real life, so when I relax on my fav forums i don’t want to be defensive. Most of us do that st all day.

Interesting observation since I find americans to be more arrogant in person and brits to be more rude so I suspect there is some truth to the generalization. I also find that British sites have ruder people, whilst American sites have more arrogant types.

It perfectly describes the difference between forums and reality and how different people use forums differently to each other.
I'm the sad boring tt tonight so I'm told.
The same poster has been trawling through my posts from years ago in an attempt to have a go at me.
There's something seriously sad about that. Not on many other forums would someone act in such a fashion.
The moderators need to come down harsher on some of the posters lately.

I type out about four times as many posts as I end up actually posting. A lot of the time I get half way through and decide I really can't be bothered. They go at that stage.
If I get as far as the 'preview' button, it is to check I haven't spelled anything wrong, fallen foul of predictive text, or left whole words out. I also check to see I haven't written anything that could be construed as insulting. The most I would do would be to say a point of view was stupid; I would never call another poster stupid for saying it.
However, I must admit that if everybody did this PistonHeads wouldn't be half as entertaining.
And to answer the original question, how does this compare to real life? Well, I am usually about five minutes behind the conversation anyway (my dad was the same) mulling over what has been said, so I don't really get the opportunity for unmeasured responses.

I thought it was pretty depressing, but unsurprising, really.
Only if you take it too seriously and are easily offended.I thought it was pretty depressing, but unsurprising, really.
Easily offended? No.
You do realise that it’s possible to voice opinions and disagreements without actually being offended? Kinda surprised you haven’t trotted out the snowflake schtick as well.

The moderators never seem to act on the obvious insults. But it seems in NPE, they will ban you for disagreeing with them!?The same poster has been trawling through my posts from years ago in an attempt to have a go at me.

The moderators do not own the forum, so I feel it unfair they act in such an obviously biased way.
There is one user in particular who seems to make fairly obvious jibes at me personally. I've never been offensive to this user, but I have disagreed with him and shown that in a respectful way (imo).
Twice now, I have said, if you have a problem, E-mail me, we could even have a phone call, or meet face to face at a PH Event. I'm an adult and if there is conflict to the point where it's being brought up repeatedly and across different threads, it should be addressed and spoken to. Maybe there is a misunderstanding.
Of course, the person did not E-mail me. I think that says a lot.
Luckily, my skin is as thick as it comes, so words simply do not hurt me!
