Things like the brexit where prople argue for years, no one conceding ground, deeply entrenched views, means ut usually quickly descends into arguments.

I never swear on PH, but I do in real life.

Am I rude? I don't think so, direct, yes. I don't think I call people names.

A friend (sadly passed away) whom I used to have long chats with online raised an interesting point.

Her thoughts were that the online personality was the ‘real one’ and the real life personality was adapted by how you would like to be seen by friends, family, workmates and society in general.

So basically if you are a nasty rude tt on PistonHeads or anywhere else online for that matter and a milk meek mannered person in real life then that is the ‘real’ you and in real life you are hiding that part of yourself.

Whether or not it’s true is does seem to make sense in its own way.

That is probably true.

It reminds me of my 1st year at uni when some obviously quite nerdy kids had made an effort to reinvent themselves.

The fascination was watching as it gradually unravelled over time.

My views that I express on PH are actually more liberal, tolerant, and left leaning than i would express in person.

I have unfortunately come to learn that many people in real life disgust me with their casual racism, xenophobia, homophobia and similar.

This is despite me working in a massive industry where you would pretty much get fired on the spot for quietly muttering anything even verging on the above.

So PH is good in a way that it allows me to express my more liberal views.

As for being argumentative, I’m pretty much the same on PH as I am in real life. I’m ‘Mr Logic’ from the Viz comic.

I want statements and claims to be evidenced, backed up with facts, arguments to be laid out with logic and points proven.

I won’t for one minute sit and listen to Keith from the pub claim things about ‘foreigners’ or ‘our economy’ without asking him to show his workings. Politely of course, but I’ll certainly ask.

Keith won’t like it, but it’s in my nature to politely cross example and make people evidence their arguments.

I deal with stuff worth millions at work, and every report, brief and decision must be accurate, legal and logical to the letter, so it’s just what I’m used to.

Of course like anyone, there will be the occasional topic where I’ll express my displeasure for someone or something.

What saddens me most is that many on PH seem to see a forum as the green light to be more right wing, more xenophobic, more homophobic and more intolerant than they would be at work, at home, with their friends and so on.

I have always been blunt but that seems worse online. Here, FB etc.

But recently (last year or so) I've made a genuine effort to be "nicer" and try to word things differently etc.

I find many people if they disagree with you, descend into insults or sly digs.
One of the recent number plate threads shows quite the contrast between people. Not even in opinion but in the way that opinion is shared.

Noone unless they have major autism, would be like that in real life. Some may, but those people would be cocks. And I think they know that.

The people I have met from here in real life have been sound guys. Ironically those are also the ones who are nicer on the boards. We don't always agree on subjects but we can discuss them or "debate" without resulting to insults or taking it personally.

I try to be pleasant online. I'm quite blunt and don't suffer fools IRL though.

The whole 'my ignorance is as good as your knowledge and I'm entitled to my opinion even if it's demonstrably wrong' that is pervasive both online and IRL used to piss me off quite a bit, but I've learned that idiots will always be idiots, and it isn't my job to fix them, just avoid them as much as possible. smile

To an extent, you may play to your audience. NPE is hilarious at times, with some posters so entrenched in their positions they can't differentiate facts /opinions / mental. Its shocking the delusional nature of many posts. There is also an awful tendency amongst certain posters, to use twitter / lbc rants to justify their position by the lunatic or mentally ill rants of others.

It can be a bit if a game, to either get a rise out of bigot OR better prove when someone is. As Lord Marylebone says, I expect people to show their workings, not be mouth pieces or echo chambers for spurious political parties / claims.

The interesting thing about some of the BREXIT type threads are the bigots on both sides. You don't have to be a racist to be a bigot.

It occurs to me that I'm far more political and right wing on PH than I am in real life. In terms of what I discuss in any case.

Not because I'm released from social constructs (or whatever) but purely because I dont want to talk politics with people I know. In the modern world people take it very personally.

And also people expressing their political views in the pub is really quite dull.

Ironically PH is almost a 'safe space' for saying what I think. hehe

On an unrelated note (and this is emphatically not aimed at you Lord Marylebone) I love the way threads like this seem to attract people who feel that they are smarter than most other PHers.

The kind of people that tend to refer to 'Dunning Kruger' with an utter lack of self-knowledge.

Typical Londoner, You are racist to anyone that lives outside London. But we expect it and deal with it by saying ah well.
We do not think we are the centre of the world but you lot do.

From other threads I checked from you the general public are folk from outside London that cannot be trusted to vote or think, again that is racist xenophobic against the rest of the UK population.

Hey mods please ban me as usual for spouting the truth.

It is possible to be right wing without being a racist xenophobe. yikes

I did like the “I deal with stuff worth millions at work, I am important” comment though.

One of the problems is, is that written word conveys no sentiment to its audience. If I were at the pub with a friend, and he said something stupid, and I said 'don't be a tt' whilst smiling, he'd know I wasn't insulting him. Say the same online, and it's just 'don't be a tt', hence the need for LOL, smiling face JK. Which can make you feel like a 12 year old on Facebook. I'd guess a lot of the time people can read too much in to written word.

I’m really glad you liked that bit.

If you want, we can talk about being company directors and earning ‘six figures’.

Then we can move onto photos of our watches in front of Porsche steering wheels and discussing skiing holidays in Courchevel 1850.

I was in the lamb and flag in Covent Garden today, this thread came to mind. Tarquin and Henry were arguing about Boris Johnson, or something. Tarquin said Henry was “full of fking st” on a point, Henry got the right royal arse, and started throwing his toys out of the pram, protesting that he didn’t say that.unfortunately, he did. It went on for a minute or two, then fizzled out. That says it all really. Even in real life, people back off when challenged. It’s a bit ghey really. It was entertaining though.

No, I don't mind being rude to the malodorous cretins on here, but not to a real person , I might get a fat lip.

Be sensible.
