I pay for my prescriptions so not overly relevant to the conversation, but my doctor has always tried to save me money if it is cheaper for me to buy something direct rather than pay the prescription charge.

He will generally say “this drug is exactly the same as is available over the counter as benedryl” or “this is just ibuprofen which you can get over the counter for much cheaper than the prescription charge”.

I think all doctors - and pharmacists- should be like this (I suspect the vast majority are).
I have had the same with my doctors.

Just been told this story.
A few years my local hospital decided they wanted to cut their electricity usage down.
They decided to replace all the twin fluorescent fittings with singles.
The twins were either scrapped or kept by the contractor.
All they needed to do was to remove 1 starter ballast from each fitting at a cost of .... peanuts.
Instead they spent thousands
Except that would have been undertaken by whoever is contracted to deliver the soft FM for the buildings

I have a new example. Head to hospital, there is a very nice touch screen system for you to register your arrival. Impressive. Then you proceed through to another room to wait. Fantastic and money well spent, no need for a receptionist etc and a smooth system. Oh wait, the f***ng system is not connected to the other which they don't tell you (nor oddly does the sign asking you to register your arrival with this pos touchscreen), this means you register, go through and two hours later when you have been waiting and go find a nurse they say "Oh no that doesn't connect to anything you have to come and find one of us". Well, now I wonder how much time and money (I bet there were committees galore) was spent designing, building and installing this new fangled "registration system" that does not actually tell anyone you have registered.

Or part of a scheme including grant/subsidy to replace the ancient lighting with modern, low energy type...

They weren't replaced with LEDs just old fashioned fluorescents

Reminds me back around 9 years ago they wanted a navigation system for the new hospital so patients could find their way around using this touch screen kiosk.
I said to the project manager, the demographic for this is going to be older people. I would struggle to use it never mind over 75’s and at 200k it was a complete waste of money.
“Ah he replied but the board have approved funding for this so it needs to be bought whether it’s a good idea or not”
I never did see the kiosk working and actually it seemed to disappear a couple of years later. It certainly isn’t there now.

Another recent one is art.
£80k to commission someone to provide art to a children’s hospital. Not volunteers drawing for free or kids designs, an actual artist.
I wonder how much is spent by the NHS on art.
I heard a recent sculpture cost over £100k
