Perfect place to retire to?

For me it’s Franschhoek. Less than hour into Cape Town and all the travel connections available from there, cheap as chips, good food, good wine. The security issue is the only thing that would make me think twice. I love Southern Africa and as much as it’s not the safest place in the world I’ve yet to find anywhere in the world I love as much.
A lot of love for NZ here which doesn’t surprise me. I really enjoyed NZ but a lot of it feels a bit sterile to me for some reason. The food and wine is good though although not cheap, the scenery is of course unbeatable and kiwis seem to have a good work/life balance.

You've never been out of Auckland have you
Come to Taranaki, where the only thing worse than the roads are the local drivers
I would say Rarotonga is close, but being a tropical island it runs the risk of massive storms.
Yes it’s true we haven’t explored much yet. Opotiki is as far as we have roamed (well I spent a few days in Wellington but that probably isn’t representative of NZ either).Come to Taranaki, where the only thing worse than the roads are the local drivers

I had a great meal in Franschoek about 18 years ago. As we were the last customers in the restaurant, the owner/chef brought out another bottle of wine and sat down and joined us for a chat. Much of said chat was him lamenting how people didn't appreciate the joys of chicken served rare!! Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
