Interest in RC cars? Can start very basic minimal tools needed and progress to more complicated better things. You learn how components like suspension, gearboxes, engines, diffs go together and how they work. Bit of engine and suspension tuning. Loads of options. you can keep to yourself or there are plenty of circuits around where you can go and try and get fast or enter friendly races.
I learned other new skills like soldering and basic electronics as one of my cars required a battery powered starter box. Get bored of cars and you can move on to hovercraft, boats, planes, choppers, drones.

Id advise an off road car of some sort like a baja buggy so you can use it anywhere as opposed to a race car which may well be silly fast but has about 2mm ground clearance so only works on a race track

Mend stuff. You'd be amazed what you can get for pennies on gumtree / ebay / facebook market place where there's not much wrong with it.

I had a Karcher in the back of the shed where the power knob...didn't. 6 screws, prized it apart, Reconnected the detergent tube, squirted a bit of WD40 in a sticky switch, now works again.
