How grim was mid 1970's London?
Discussion
Back at the start of the 80's my mates girlfriend went down to London for nursing training & rented a flat in fairfield rd in Bow. My pal used to go to see her & became a fairly frequent customer of the Bromley Arms (opposite Bow Bus Garage) This progressed onto the Bromley being our regular London 'accomodation' when Hull City were playing down there. We'd have 2 of 3 minibus trips down each season & were hosted by the landlord "Sid the Yid" & his wife who wore a rather grimy 'housecoat' - The pub seemed to be open 24hrs a day & bus crews would come off shift in the early hours and take refreshments & just put money into the unlocked till ! Looking on street view - the area seems a lot cleaner & more upmarket & the Bromley no longer a pub (sadly)

I’m down at Battersea having my break before taking a train back to Wembley and looking around me, by far the tidiest and most attractive looking building is the brick built pre-war five story block of apartments with balconies along all sides, as mentioned earlier when we were talking about various Sweeney locations. The surrounding new builds look soulless and dull in comparison, a scene not helped by the proliferation of weeds and graffiti along the railway boundary. Ironic really , considering the thread title!
I’ll post some photos when I get home later.

Any ideas as to the location of the pub that the focal point of S1E6 with a gang using the cellar to access the neighboring bank vault? The interior looked amazing, really hope its still standing.
That might be The Warrington in West London which is still in business, a few of us went there for a ‘tea break’ a few years ago.I wasn't around at the time, but I guess many would say the 70s was the nadir for London economically in the post-war period.
For those around at the time- did you see it as inevitable that it would massively regain momentum in the following decades, or did you think it's best days were behind it?

Was the regeneration of London inevitable? Or did the policies of government have a big effect? I would argue the latter. For those around at the time- did you see it as inevitable that it would massively regain momentum in the following decades, or did you think it's best days were behind it?

Neither. For those around at the time- did you see it as inevitable that it would massively regain momentum in the following decades, or did you think it's best days were behind it?
Perhaps I was very unimaginative - I just thought it was what it was and that things would not change.
I look back with slightly misty eyes at a past that no longer exists - not that it was better, just different. I love watching films set in 60's/70's London.

Battersea this morning, showing the area where some of 'All Coppers Are' was shot in 1971...
Battersea Power Station is completely hidden by this new build gubbins...
The 'Battersea Book Depository' has featured in the background of many portraits of steam locos waiting to come off Stewarts Lane shed to go up to Victoria station... no sign of Lee Harvey Oswald today though...

Anyone remember the 70s TV series ‘The Chinese Detective’? Set in docklands before it became modernised as Docklands. One episode had dialogue referring to RM and RT type buses - joy for London bus fans.
Went in The Blind Beggar for a few pints in January. Pretty ste tbh.

I’m currently in Luton, which is even more grim now than London was in the ‘70s!
