I was a big fan of UIQ as well - I had the SE W950 which was the Walkman phone with loads of storage but no camera, which wasn't a big loss considering how average phone cameras were back then. I worked in the industry at the time so watched the original iPhone launch and didn't see much on the face of it my year old SonyEricsson couldn't do - the difference was Apple made it really easy to develop and install apps, which the legacy manufacturers didn't do. The rest as they say....

From memory Palm got bought by HP, who kept Palm OS for their own uses but Open Sourced WebOS, which was Palms other offering at the time. That's now become the operating system for LG Smart TVs so is definitely living on.
Interesting. thumbup

Somehow I have always done desktop dev, even though (or perhaps because) I've been freelance for 25 years (so get hired to do stuff I have expertise in). So I never dabbled in all that. Apart from one contract which was Windows CE which turned out to be a complete sham anyway but was an amazing experience. Google the Gizmondo scandal if interested. I wasn't in any way involved, and was just a contractor and just got paid for what I did (although had to sue the agency as they got stung for non-payment and tried to pass that off onto me. But as I told them, "what the fk do you think you get your 20% for? That's your risk". We settled on the courtroom steps)

Tornadoes seemed to be in the news a lot more 20 years ago and I can't remember the last time I heard about one. Are they less frequent now or just less dangerous / better protection?

I haven't always wanted to know this, but what is the point in 'speedy boarding' on to a short haul Easy Jet flight?

Getting to spend longer on the plane seems to offer zero advantage to me. The departure lounge seems much more spacious, even if I don't have a seat. Speedy getting off would be handy perhaps.

More space to put your bags in the overhead racks before they fill up and you have to go up and down the plane to find a spot.

I've never had any trouble fitting an average sized bag in the overhead locker. I imagine if you push your luck with baggage size you might struggle though. Serves you right. Nothing meets the eye with greater pleasure than witnessing someone at the boarding gate fail the Easyjet baggage test in front of 200 other people who are all simultaneously thinking "what a tt".

Speedy getting off is a great idea.

OK, thought I must be missing something. My hand luggage is usually just a small rucksack that I keep handy on the floor.

Not just if you have a large bag. More and more people have large bags and they take up space which pushes people with normal bags further away.

IME, short haul on EasyJet folk don’t check bags, & try to take as much hand luggage as possible. This always caused problems with not enough space in overheads.

Nowadays

If you have speedy boarding, you also have the old sized hand luggage allowance.

If you don’t have speedy by default you have only 1 small bag for under seat in front of you.

The speedy boarding queue is sometimes half the folk on the plane, but they can put their bags up high.
The normal folk don’t have that entitlement , so when they get to boarding gate their luggage is sized (sometimes everyone in the queue has to use the size checker next to the counter & they have a card machine & charge anyone’s who’s bag is too big to go under a seat.

On the plane then they don’t listen to the second half to board complaining or trying to find space for their bags, as they are all supposed to fit under the seats.

This, and having space to get yourself sorted for the flight.

I've only had speedy boarding when it came free with the seats we booked, but it was far less of a log jam, and we were able to get all our bags in the bin directly over our heads.

This was yesterday.

Probably a multitude of things but better prediction must play a part.

You may have your wires crossed here. It's oversized bags in the overhead lockers and a selfish nature I was commenting on. I'm sure there's enough room i the hold for all your larger bags.

Yes, much less bother, just kick it under the seat in front, one
eagle eyed crew member spotted this before take off one time and
put it in the overhead thingy, I was going to give her a withering stare
but she looked the spit of Betty Boo so I was captivated by love.

The benefit to the passenger is minimal.

There is though a financial benefit to the airline. There is no additional cost to provide a speedy boarding option so the money people pay for this is pure profit for the airline. Similar for fast-track security at the airport.

For both, the value (perceived or otherwise) diminishes when everyone buys the speedy option.

I've used RyanAir from East Midlands in the past, and it made me laugh that the speedy boarders were first to get onto a waiting bus, then all the slow boarders crammed on, so when the bus got to the aircraft, the people who'd paid extra to be first were actually last off the bus. biggrin

No one buys the speedy boarding you just get it when you buy a carry on bag

Like other gimmicks the whole point of 'speedy boarding' is to raise revenue for the company by costing them very little, by convincing people they're on to a good thing... .

I've noticed some companies now offer (on standard short/mid haul flights) extra leg room seats and extra room seats as well for different prices. Find the gimmick...and sell it.
