UK - apparently it is going to be the hottest day of the year so far and possibly the hottest March day since 1968!

Certainly feels likely here. (East Berks).

Having wobbled, the 'big guns' (better models) are now behind next weeks cold spell.

Gardeners across the UK - be prepared for sharp frosts and possible snow, especially north of M62, but anywhere could see a shower.

So Puggit , what is the science behind all this? It s been 20 degrees plus, fking freezing, sun burn territory today, back to to below zero and possible sleet/snow next week. What gives?
The jet stream is on its holidays. High pressure is in existance where it normally isn't (as it has been for most of winter). There's a strong Greenland high, pushing winds from directly north. If this was winter, there would be much excitement (we're not far off the same type of charts that caused Dec 2010).

Positive - no Atlantic weather, sometimes warm. Mostly dry.
Negative - sometimes get stuck in a cold pattern. Hope you've all got enough oil for a short while....

6 (yes six) degrees and a light flurry. Yet all winter we had 1 or 2 degrees and cold rain.

Dew points and humidity matter!

Worst weather in at least 10 years here. (NW Scotland). Sleet, snow and 70mph gusts. Tree branches crashing into windows.
Are you near the Torridon Hotel that was on 'Amazing hotels' ?

Well the forecasters missed this one! About an inch on the Bucks/Oxon boarder and still coming down heavily. Not really settling on the roads though, so all good!
It was forecast by the amateurs hehe

I was too tired last night to put anything up, sorry!

Good news after this morning's surprise snow - it's uphill from here!

The high pressure to our west which is bringing down the northerly winds will move across the UK - most likely end up with a slack easterly. There's not much cold to our east, so temps will be around average.

Dry, settled - not warm, but very pleasant in the sun. Frost threat should end around the weekend (we have a LOT of pruning/planting to catch up on...)

There is a 50/50 threat of another northerly in around a weeks time.

Dry remains the form horse whatever the outcome, but the high might align to give us another cool blast.

I have a pub meal booked next Friday, I am not happy....

Puggit, why have we had this mass of cold air over us for so long? I really can’t remember it being so cold right into May, with April being pretty much a write off...

Realise it’s due to high pressure, but is there a blockage in the Arctic or something? Jet stream switched off?!
Pretty much - high pressure over Greenland. If this was Jan/Feb we'd be relishing a cold spell of significance. The jet stream is also south of the UK, meaning we're sat on the cold side frown

Early indications are the 2nd half of May will be better...
