A random comment from someone on a FB conspiracy theory page (‘Truth theory’), which sums CTists up nicely I think.

Reasonable person said:

What is the Great Reset - and how did it get hijacked by conspiracy theories?

A vague set of proposals from an influential organisation has been transformed by online conspiracy theorists into a powerful viral rallying cry. What is the truth behind the "Great Reset"?
Believers spin dark tales about an authoritarian socialist world government run by powerful capitalists and politicians - a secret cabal that is broadcasting its plan around the world.

among the most popular posts are baseless statements that the Great Reset is a strategic part of a grand conspiracy by the global elite, who somehow planned and managed the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this narrative, lockdown restrictions were introduced not to curb the spread of the virus, but to deliberately bring about economic collapse and a socialist world government, albeit run for the benefit of powerful capitalists.
The nebulousness of this conspiracy theory means it has found followers among anti-vaccine activists, anti-lockdown campaigners, new-age healers, and those on the far right and far left.

Melanie Smith, head of analysis at Graphika, who researches online movements and disinformation, says the rumours are typical of an "anti-establishment conspiracy theory".

In the hands of a diverse group of online activists, the Great Reset has been transformed - from a call to encourage people to think about a sustainable future, to a sinister plot against humanity.

These conspiracy theories began circulating online around the June 2020 launch, but only gained significant traction later in the year.
On 15 November, the phrase started trending on Twitter when a video went viral showing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a UN meeting in September, saying the pandemic provided an opportunity for a "reset". It's unclear whether he was referring to the WEF plan.

But some claimed his speech was proof that global leaders were using the pandemic as a pretext to introduce a range of socialist and environmental policies.
Thousands of Donald Trump supporters boosted this idea. They claimed that that a victory for Mr Trump in November's election was the only chance to thwart the so-called secret plot.
Most of the narratives being promoted around the Great Reset are not new.
Experts say similar ideas about the emergence of a totalitarian world government have been circulating since the 1960s under the umbrella term New World Order, which itself borrows ideas from conspiracy theories of the 18th Century.
Great Reset sceptics repackage those ideas, folding in new baseless Covid-era claims - for instance about how vaccines "contain microchips" and "enslave" people.
Its "adaptability and close ties with New World Order narrative", Ms Smith says, make it likely that the conspiracy theory will outlast the pandemic.
  • Microchips, 'altered DNA' and other false vaccine rumours
  • The accidental invention of the Illuminati conspiracy
  • How Covid myths merged with QAnon
Conspiracy theories replace reason with fantasy. Online activists who deny the existence of climate change often engage with the Great Reset theory to "dismiss sustainability and renewable energy initiatives as an elite agenda for control.

I guess that’s another issue with a CT they are just themes on many an age old trope … which people think they have “discovered” when in fact they are regurgitating age old stuff that’s been rewritten a thousand times over

See also 15 minute cities, a proposal to move services and shops within a 15 minute walk/ cycle of where you live, somehow interpreted to mean you won’t be allowed outside a 15 minute walk of your house. Oxfords bus gates aren’t an attempt at imposing a 15 minute city either.

“You will own nothing, and be happy” was a comment on the increasing trend to rent and use subscriptions rather than buy, eg Spotify, Netflix, car leases. It was never about taking away stuff you already own.

The thing about the Great Reset, is it's quite easy to find out what it's all about - Klaus Schwab wrote a book on it and everything.

Well I say it's quite easy to find out, I'm told the book itself is incredibly dry, a bit rambling and full of fairly batst ideas no one in their right mind would consider, but it is there in black and white if you want to know more.

“ CONSPIRACY THEORISTS... ARE THEY ALL JUST A BIT THICK?”

Thankfully largely corralled in the Covid Fruitcake/nutter area.

Easily Ignored.

But THEY have scripts to erase any dissenters/normal people

So feed on their echo chamber, down the rabbit hole they go.

Funny but quite sad at the same time.

Plenty of material for future studies, dissections

This is on a similar level to some of the wibble that does appear on that thread from time to time.

You want to dissect people you disagree with on the internet? Might be time to close the internet browser Mr Dahmer....

Yes there is.

Do a search (because I can't remember how to do it)

It was mentioned recently in the Coronovirus thread ( so we could all ignore Sambucket)

The script is here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

No it really isn't.

This thread is in no way comparative to the absolute lunacy witnessed on a daily basis in the CV and other conspiracy threads.

This is my FB profile pic. Just a joke, from The Life of Brian film of course.

Yesterday, a (rather rabid) anti vaccine type accused me of being a ‘Jewboy’ who endorsed ‘mass genocide’, just based on the joke pic.

It’s easy to see how they interpret things, and how gullible they can be.

I’ve mentioned this before in here. When you mention the £millions being poured into motorway upgrades to ease access to airports (i.e M42 and Birmingham airport) it falls on deaf ears. It’s not what they want to hear, and that’s that.

Something clandestine historically is not proof that all conspiracy theories therefore are undeniable

We know governments have spy agencies and engage in all manner of weaponised approaches to gaining an upper hand, however that doesn't mean any conspiracy that is totted out on social media with no evidence or source data is therefore undeniable. The majority are (and we are probably looking at 99.99%+) completely false.

The important thing is that each piece of evidence is judged on its own merit, in context, with reliable source data. Certainly not a behaviour we see with any sort of rigour on a number of threads on PH.

You should have countered with a statement as equally outrageous, like a claim that they have a secret room under their garden shed, where they fiddle with dead badgers whilst dressed as Hitler.

It was a red top clickbait story about an air ambulance landing at Yeovil football ground (I think), due to a ‘medical emergency’.

Someone said that they are seeing these medical emergencies every day now, obviously falling for the clickbait.

I replied that they’ve always happened daily, but not reported on as they are now, to which I attracted the usual ire, and this deranged guy jumped in with the usual initial insult, in this case ‘nob’, then he seemed to become obsessed with me being Jewish, as if he could score a victory by outing me on it.

It was bizarre enough, without me pouring any more petrol on it.
