Something I notice and dislike (not so much this post, but there are plenty of others) - and it's very much evident on PH.
It's this sneering "looking down" on places "worst place in the UK" or whatever that goes on.
I very much agree. As a Lettings Manager I have to point out to people that just because it's a posh street, it doesn't mean they won't have a drunken buffoon on a Saturday night singing or oiks roaming the streets. I have far better times going to the 'rough' areas, you get genuine conversation with people rather than Hugo coming from London looking for a pad to escape the city life. It's this sneering "looking down" on places "worst place in the UK" or whatever that goes on.
That said, Darlington is a st hole. I got off a train there on my way to Catterick many moons ago and was pounced on by a group of feral youths looking for a scrap. My pink shirt and blazer whilst appropriate for the Mess was not appropriate for the town centre. They picked the wrong lad, but it engrained the place in my mind as a dump. I think experience of a place is more important than reputation. Swansea, as Dylan Thomas said, was an 'ugly lovely town' and I'm sure this is true of many places that are oft derided.
I live in supposedly one of the poshest villages in the UK, in a very affluent part of East Herts, and I also visit Darlo regularly, as a business associate/good friend lives there (in a fabulous house close to the town centre FWIW). I stay at the Bannatyne Hotel and we walk the couple of minutes into town (in normal times of course) for a few beers and a curry (Cafe Spice, a proper Indian, and I love it) after visiting Nissan or one of a number of other clients I work with up in the NE.
Sometimes I'll stay at Rockliffe if we are meeting clients for dinner - nothing sthole about that place! Special mention for the wine list in the Orangery.
I much prefer the folk in Darlo, and we have some utter aholes in my 'posh village'. OK, there are some rough parts of Darlo, but there are also some lovely parts too - which is exactly like my reasonably affluent local town, Bishops Stortford. But the people in Darlo are far, far warmer and welcoming, and I much prefer spending time there when compared to Stortford. There is also some stunning countryside minutes away.
No, Darlo's not that bad.

Im happy to admit I was pretty upset when my dog croaked it, but hmmm
£600 for a consultation and put to sleep? Don't think so. We paid around £300 for our Dane to be cremated. https://www.gumtree.com/p/community/crowdfunding-f...

It remains unfunny.
I don't think it's meant to be particularly funny. As the nicknames of certain social groups are not allowed to be used by pistonheads, posters have to allude to who they mean (not very) surreptitiously. Loiking dags is one of these.
Other stereotypes for identification are available.

Bishop's Stortford? Motorway drone and aeroplanes taking off all day. No hills within miles. No, Darlo's not that bad.
Darlo. Just about far enough away from the A1, and sat inbetween the Dales, the North Pennines, and the North Yorkshire Moors.
No contest.

To be fair, you don't hear any motorway drone in Stortford, and unfortunately there's no bloody planes taking off all day Darlo. Just about far enough away from the A1, and sat inbetween the Dales, the North Pennines, and the North Yorkshire Moors.

Plenty of hills and some fabulous countryside around here too.
Still prefer Darlo!

Not proper hills. I’ve spent many an evening cycling south of the airport, there are some nice villages hidden among the back roads, and I was once joined on a twilight ride by a barn owl. The rolling countryside is pleasant enough I suppose.Plenty of hills and some fabulous countryside around here too.
Still prefer Darlo!
Lots of love for my hometown but in the council thread... I’m not sure if that makes me proud or sad.
Darlo is very council in parts but as mentioned there are plenty of nice parts to make up for that.. the people also vary but in general (like everywhere else) they are decent types.
If all you rich southerners could please start pushing up house prices around here that would be great...

Plenty of hills on the other side of town! Just head west and you have the Pennines which have some exceptional roads for cycling and driving. The Buttertubs pass for example.. If all you rich southerners could please start pushing up house prices around here that would be great...

The Turbinia in Aycliffe was interesting mind, but the quiz night was always decent.
