A bit council (Vol 5)

If you're going with ideas on paper that never reached fruition then a bloke called Leonardo beat him to it by some years.
I was all set to make this same point, but whereas Da Vinci's 'tank' was an idea for a protected, semi mobile firing position, this Aussie chap's (who had the exceptional name of 'Lancelot Eldin de Mole') design was more concerned with mobility over rough terrain and trench systems (specifically using tracks, which are fundamental to what is now considered a tank and were missing from Da Vinci's design) while protected and able to carry a heavy load.Tanks as we think of them now require both, but in WWI the main role of the tank was to flatten / rip out barbed wire and cross trenches with the infantry in tow, and the British government actually acknowledged de Mole's design which predated their own by two years had a lot of superior design features and would likely have advanced tank design more rapidly if he had been listened to.
His 1912 design looks like this:
which I would argue has carried over a lot more design features to modern tanks than have been retained from the first 'true' tanks designed by the British in WWI:
ETA: I forgot that this is the council thread.
Not knowing something, then doing a small amount of research and acting like you are an authority on the subject: council
tanks: council
