I'm looking for a car and 1 came up on ebay, right price, spec, mileage, just 1 photo and this.

I mailed and asked for more photos and details, got what looks like a sensible reply from a real person, lots of photos including 1 with rapid charger on the garage in the background.

Then another car, same model, came up on ebay, different colour, location, spec, price but with the same pic as below but with different_name@vrmail.co.uk

If it was a bit closer I would ask to go to see it and find out what's going on, but it's 70 miles away so is a bit of a hike just to call someone's bluff, if it is a bluff. They don't come up every day so I might have to wait a while before I see another.

I'm not sure with Covid restrictions how/when/if I can see it/ collect it, but that's another problem!

Anyone seen this before? Scam or just dodging ebay fees?

Its just a scam. if you want to confirm it email and ask if you can come and see it.

You'll get a reply saying he's in the navy / his uncle working in Nigeria is dealing with it / some other equally implausible reason why you can't come.

Yeah it's a scam, I saw it happen to a classic car dealers eBay page, most of their ads got copied with a lower price, and only one picture (and the other picture with an email address).
I reported the ads to eBay and contacted the dealer to say that most of their ads have been copied by spammers - never got an acknowledgement or anything though

Well known scam...

Hacked account: look the the 'sellers' other items for sale and I guarantee that they'll be offering thousands of other vehicles for sale (bikes, cars, boats... you name it).

Report the add to Ebay and they'll hopefully remove it sharpish.

The reg was obscured on the pics, so I mailed to ask for it and see when I can go and view it. The reg he gave isn't on DVLA (no surprise!)

As you said!

"Reg: MAT1J

I am presently offshore working as Mechanical Supervisor for EnQuest in the Kraken Field. Pick up will be possible starting the 20th of March when I will return on land. That if it won't get sold in the meantime as I have a few offers at this moment.

I would have opted for a face to face sale but being offshore is not possible. I propose to deal through eBay and by using PayPal PAD (Pay After Delivery) service which offers a refund policy. It's similar to an escrow service, so they will hold the payment while you fully inspect the car.

Delivery to your address can be arranged and pre-purchase inspection for 7 days. You can inspect the car for any damages and reject it if you find something wrong with it. I am pretty sure this will not be the case as I'm being totally honest and upfront with you. You should know that the payment is sent to PayPal and not me personally. It will be put on hold and released by PayPal only if you want to keep the car. I can give you more details if interested."
