Possibly because tattoos on arms/torso aren't "look at me" enough?

Pretty much nails it I would suggest.......

One of the main, and most interesting effects of this ersatz " self harm " is the
severe and usually successful sabotaging of any sort of meaningful career,
I wonder if this is an surprise and [ unlikely ] unseen consequence or a conscious decision .

Does the OP have any examples of the kind of thing he is talking about. I feel some visuals would help me make up my mind where I am on this important issue.

Afraid not old boy frown I didn’t consider it to be good form to walk up to random women and take photos of them. I’d rather not end up on some sort of special register.

Sadly I don’t think I’ve come across anyone with a face tattoo who isn’t mentally unwell.

Often seem troubled types, but then I’m sure some are normal ish!
There're are fair few Polynesian might take issue with that statement.

I don’t understand why a professional tattooist would agree to ink a face with a crap tattoo.
Knowing the consequences, the social impact etc. ought to be enough for them to refuse to do it. Almost like a taboo area?
There’s enough other body parts to go at before going above the neck surely?
It’s just the permanency of it that makes it seem crazy to me.

I think the issue is "professional", so much tattoo equipment is available from ebay these days, every man and his dog that thinks they can draw, are now inking their mates for free and their council flat....

I hadn’t considered that. I didn’t know the gear was so readily available. I was thinking more in terms of the professional shops no doubt wanting to maintain a good reputation.
Still, a bottle of booze and anything seems like a good idea at the time. Most of the coverups on Tattoo Fixers on tv seem to be from drunken holiday ‘good ideas’ although I can’t remember seeing a facial one and I’ve watched loads of them.

Previous posters couple of have got it right (and I apologise for the following elitist post - the PH red trousers/tan leather brogues/"I'd never employ someone like that" company directors may want to skip my post).

I've known a few tattoo artists and body piercers over the years through the metal/goth/fetish scene.

Thing is, unless you were really dedicated to ink (as in full sleeves, chest/back piece and anything and everything else in between) a decent artist back in the day would point-blank refuse to ink your hands and certainly your face.

The theory being that work you can't hide (i.e. sleeved for 'respectability' when you're applying for a job) was only to be done on really, really dedicated people. People who'd spent countless hours and countless money under the tattoo gun.

Put simply, you couldn't walk in off the street and ask for a facial tattoo as any decent artist wouldn't want to be associated with that sort of thing. They had to get to know you before they'd disfigure you.

Studio I used to hang out at had a sign on the wall that read 'If you're high, drunk, obnoxious or smelly... please come back when you're not'. The point was that you don't want to tattoo/pierce some one who is not really with it.

Now tattoos are more mainstream and everyone knows Daren ("OMG, he's brilliant and he's only been tattooing for a week") who has bought a cheap rig from eBay and has set himself up as an 'artist' in his bedroom, standards have slipped.

Hence the young lasses with badly drawn ink on their faces.

Case in point: 25 odd years ago a mate was convinced - he was 18 or so at the time - that a stylised Gecko lizard design wrapped around his neck and leading onto his face was a really good idea. I and numerous other mates tried to talk him out of it but he'd not hear a word spoken against his dream. We went to a local studio (Danny's in Nottingham IIRC - they did a lot of MC work) and he explained his idea and produced a design he had drafted to the artist. The bloke said "show me your other work". When my mate replied "I haven't got any" the artist told him to go away and come back in 10 years and show off his work. Only then would he be happy to work on my mate's face with the ink he wanted.

Needless to say, matey is VERY glad he didn't get that tattoo started. He's got a lot of work done, but nothing that can't be hidden by a long sleeved shirt.

Ask ANY tattoo artist and they will tell you that people will ask for ink of their children's names: the artist will ask for the the name to be written down (you really don't any misunderstandings when it comes to getting a tattoo done!) but a worrying majority of punters won't actually know how to spell their own kid's names. Same with the flash designs (the stuff in books you can choose rather than custom work): people will walk in off the street and say "that one please" after 1 seconds consideration. Think how how long some women (and men to be fair) spend deciding what they are going to wear on a night out... yet they'll mark their skin for the rest of their life after the briefest of consideration.

Related anecdote as I can't sleep:

Ask any female body piercer who works on PAs, DS, Frenum etc. (knob piercings for those not in the know) and she'll tell you EVERY bloke will say "it's cold in here, ain't it?" as he gets the old chap out. Lass I used to know told me she kept her studio at 27 c plus to keep people comfortable but blokes would still claim it was icy cold in there.

She offered me mates rates on intimate piercings but I declined as I'm a strictly above the neck guy (I wear a labret bar closure (lip ring) and lots of ball closure ear rings).

I would have thought that a non permanent tattoo ink would be a good idea, something that would fade in sunlight over a couple of years.

If you like the tattoo you can have it redone.

At least it would be an option.

It always seems to be just about ready to launch. Maybe they’ll get there.

My mate at 17 was obsessed with Renault 19 16 valves.

He was saving to buy his sisters 8v 19 off her which he was gonna transform.

He really was obsessed with it all.

He wanted the 16v logo tattooed on his upper arm

Thankfully he didn’t.

Shortly afterwards he did bang some woman who was illegally in the country and ended up bringing up the kid. Never seen him since!

Ditto those huge thigh tattoos on otherwise pretty young women.

I get that it's everyone's own choice to make, but the issue these days is that they've become fashionable and people who wouldn't have got them otherwise are doing because it's "in". Problem is, it will be out again at some point. It's like these niche types of music that become trendy for a while. For long enough no one knows it exists except for a a minority of hardcore listeners, then someone influential decides it's trendy and all the teenies start listening to it. Then, later on, it becomes un-trendy again and goes back underground. Problem is, you can't get rid of a tattoo that easily.

Very bizarre to think people wake up and think, ooh a tattoo on my face would really enhance my look.
Equally, I always thought it was bizarre that people wake up think "what I really need is to look like I have a large, shiny blob of snot hanging out of each nostril" and then get their septum pierced.

And to be fair, the same applies to men with face tattoos. They look garbage.
