Similar issue here with lifting cash out on Monday. Needed £5800 to pay builders for completed works and they wanted to know name of company and if possible an invoice. "You could be lifting this money out against your will due to scammers." I was told when I was reluctant to give any information because as far as I'm concerned, it's my money thus my business. They were alright and happy with pictures of my finished kitchen and a few answers.

Isn’t it the case that you can’t take more than £6000 out of your account at one go due to the money laundering regs?

I’m guessing you’d have to make more than one withdrawal that’s the case. I had trouble getting £3000 pounds out of my local branch to buy a used car and they directed me to my nearest bigger branch in Guildford to get the funds. And that was over 13 years ago!
My bank (Barclays) allows me to choose my daily ATM withdrawal limit, which tops out at £6k - try to find a cash machine that will let you take more than £500 per transaction is the bigger issue - I found a Post Office ATM locally that allows £2k per withdrawal which was handy when my builders wanted cash last year.

Cash over the counter though, I didn't think there was a limit - I arranged to have £75k out in cash 3yrs ago (again Barclays) - they said they had to order it it, which took 2 days but other than that it was fine.
