Write a book on how you managed to come out the other end of a divorce settlement richer than you went in. Sunday times bestseller nailed on right there.

He’s not actually said he’s divorced .

He might mean he’s got more time on his hands due to retiring . He needs to clarity .

Without sounding rude I’d not need to turn to the masses on PH’s to ask how to fill my time.

Thanks all, some good reminders here about what is important in life. I have travelled quite a lot but was usually the passing-through sort, not stay-a-while and find out more, so will definitely investigate. I do like sailing and have chartered a lot, but a trans-ocean is way beyond my attention span, and the faff factor of boat ownership seems huge. This being PH I will start spannering again and was thinking historic racing, but would have to stop it from becoming a time pit.

To clarify, eight figures (GBP), grown-up offspring, and divorcing (equitably!).

Think you've just described Pistonheads in a nutshell smile

I was going add 'sadly' to that but appears to work for many.

Good luck fella.

I was going to reply to your OP yesterday but your post lacked detail (I wasn't going to ask for more as it is personal). Now you have added a bit of detail, I'll add my thoughts.

With a decent budget and plenty of time I'd start overlanding. I'd pick up a suitable vehicle and do/help with the conversion. There's plenty of ideas and information on Youtube to get you started. Take a look at Unidan - https://unidan.com.au - for some ideas. As for destinations and planning, that's half the fun.

I'd probably plan my trips around a bit of charity work, maybe an overland trip to Africa and help out with education, food production or health. What type of charity work I would choose is a personal thing and only you know what appeals to you. Good luck with your future and I'd be interested to see what you do and how it pans outs.

I think they are all being a bit tame. eight figures in GBP is a serious amount of spending money. The interest alone should be able to pay running costs for most of the "normal" hobbies or interests like car restoring and diving.

Buy a small island and build your own lair?

I think if you asked 100 people you'd get 100 different answers. scratchchin
Now there's clarification on the number, my person choice in those circumstances would be half a dozen nice apartments in interesting cities around the world with a suitable vehicle in the underground carpark then spending a few months a year in each flying between them in private jets/1st class travel.
I personally don't crave a lot of company but I'm sure you'd soon get a small social circle in each location....obviously all once world travel is back to 'normal'.

I’d actually think it would be hard to establish a good social circle when you’re not in one place for any decent length of time. Being unable to commit to regular events/meet ups and only being on the ground for fleeting stopovers I think always leaves you at the edge of socialising, particularly if those you are socialising with live there year round. You can build lots of acquaintances and definitely some friends, but when you can only commit to a few events a few weeks/months a year and then nothing for another 12 months it’s very hard to get into close circles who meet every week/fortnight or as part of any hobbies they do.

I'd treat myself to a couple of motors, I'd drive across Europe, I'd spend months abroad sunning it up, I'd visit seedy European brasshouses, I'd probably partake in a lot of drug taking and I'd also visit places like Australia and Indonesia.

Whatever you decide, enjoy it mate, I'm not sure of the circumstances of how you're receiving the money but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, grasp it with both hands.

Travel with purpose.

Don't go to New Orleans, instead go to the Mardi Gras.
Don't go to New York, instead spend New Year in Times Square.
Don't go to Milan, instead go to the Monza F1 race.
Don't go to India. No, seriously, just don't.

Actually you’ve raised another thing I would do with 6 figures in the bank. A year of following the F1 with paddock club at every destination.

No point me telling you to go diving and having sex with young attractive women etc as I’m sure you’ll be able to work all that out for yourself.

I’m just really curious how you’ll be suddenly getting so much money? None of my business but I can’t imagine one day somehow getting £10m out of the blue.

With an open cheque book and unlimited time -

Travel - Start following a good global sporting tour (F1, Golf, Tennis etc.) go VIP at every event and you will have a great time and meet interesting people with similar means to yourself. You will likely find a social group that attend all these meetings that will open doors to other social events.

Hobbies - Whatever hobbies you pick, you have the ability to take them as far and further than the majority of people could do. Access to the best coaching, advise, gear, tools, equipment, locations. Endless possibilities.

Business - Ever thought you could do something or make something you use better? Now you can and it doesn't matter if you don't make a profit, the lights will stay on.

Charity - Nothing feels better than giving back, find something that's personal to you and make someones life better. That is priceless in my opinion.

Enjoy!

Sticks.

It's great to be in a position to be able to amuse yourself without limitations, so enjoy that. But work and family responsibilities also add personal value and these will largely be ending. And other people will be getting on with their lives and career so there's potential for less contact than you'd envisaged, relative to the time you have.

The financial advisers I know sometimes recommend to people that, as well as enjoying all the things you want, do something which is rewarding, which gives you value and engages with other people. Supporting a local sports club or organisation, using your skills and financial backing so they move forward. Or if it's your thing, restore an older property, or learn something you've never had time to. As well as enjoying yourself that is.

TLDR: Stay useful; stay in contact; stay mentally stimulated; stay fit; have fun.

Serious answer over, how about doing a PPL? It's a good way to make most other things seem cheap, apart from owning a plane or boat, or divorce, obviously.
