… built the bit of Barclays’ computer system in the early 1990s that knows two accounts belong to the same person.

Curious what others here have done at work that I’ve seen or used?

Did you have anything to do with their mortgage system? If so, you’re going on the list.

hehe

He said he built the recognition software, and may only have one account.

The leading question is does he in fact have two accounts, thus continually testing his system ? Or just one account.

..............was in charge and control of the manufacture of Moussec, the sparkling wine your wives used to get drunk on so you could take advantage of her in the 1980's. No thanks needed.

And I bet nobody remembers it smile

Wrote the first graphical display software for McLaren back in the 90s, and wrote the telemetry transmission system for Stewart Racing, that turned up on tomorrow's world

My efforts at Barclays were distinctly unimpressive. Felt sure there’d be more interesting ones out there, as indeed there appear to be!

(Nothing to do with mortgage system, but if I’ve messed up your banking accounts I’m sorry. I was young. And I don’t bank with Barclays)

We used to have people who did that sort of thing.

Be fairly confident they did a better job than my code did too. This was pre-AI so for 6 months my life was wondering things like: “How can I tell if Mr JM Smith is the same person as Jonathan M Smith?” .

Typhoons,
Dominoes,
McClaren,
Moussec…

… can’t argue with the variety here

Invented one of the leading home use blood glucose test systems for diabetics that now had cumulative sales of more than $12 bn.

And no.....I did not manage to negotiate a % royalty from the company I worked for. Balls.

Helped develop a system that searched the National Insurance Number Index by address or post code for the DSS (gobsmacking that it hadn't been done before to be honest!). Used to detect fraud whereby huge numbers of NINOs were registered to one address (if there are 32 people registered to a two up two down its probably fraudulent!)

The pilot system alone recovered enough benefit payments to pay for the whole development project.

Sorry!

I designed most of the antenna monitoring circuits that went onto cellular base stations around 20 years ago.

Played a huge part in the adoption of speed limiters on coaches, and subsequently trucks, in the eighties and nineties. National Express coaches were often doing 80-95mph downhill scaring passengers, sometimes with nasty consequences.

Many years ago I was on a team bringing major automation to NHS clinical laboratories.
Unfortunately the accountants had too much input.

I designed a system to update some IBM telecoms equipment without rebooting.

Also a system involving string, cotton reels and biro springs to allow an even older system to reboot from a teletype and 110 feet of paper tale in a loop.

I can remember going down the M6 from Shap towards Manchester on my bike cruising at about 80 mph when I got tailgated by a coach - those were the days laugh

everyone that's spent a few decades working in design has been involved in a project that was screwed by accountants.
