Old fashioned family games we played.

We also used to play a fair number of games as a family when I was growing up.
The usual Snakes and Ladders, Top Trumps, Scrabble and Monopoly. We had a modern Monopoly set (for the 70s/80s) but my mum also had a set from when she was young - the pieces were cardboard cutouts set in a wooden base, and the houses and hotels were all made of wood.
Also card games - Whist, and Newmarket.
Risk, Yahtzee, and Game of Life were also regulars.
I also remember playing " Beetle" at a Beetle Drive a few times with quite a lot of people in teams sat a different tables - maybe it was at cubs/scouts or similar.
As kids, and at school, we'd also play Scabbie Queen (mentioned above), and sometimes chess, backgammon, Go, and occasionally Rummicub.
BEETLE... Sure I had that, plastic beetles that you had to assemble. First to complete... Won.The usual Snakes and Ladders, Top Trumps, Scrabble and Monopoly. I have been told that the old original games are collector items now... some fetch good money.
( wish I’d kept my Scalextric & train stuff now too).
A lot of the games are in my brothers loft...

POPPIN HOPPIES: If you moistened the base, they would stay down for ages.
( or put them around the living room for extra fun)

Board games have been having a huge revival over the last few years, and the pandemic accelerated that. It's a billion dollar industry.
There are dozens of new games coming out, review sites, you can play online or with a traditional set.
Modern classics include Carcassonne (place tiles to build roads and villages) and Ticket To Ride (build railways across America), party card games like Werewolf (also an app) and Exploding Kittens, strategy games like Pandemic (resource management) or deck builders like Disney's Villainous (play as a famous Disney baddie).
There are board game simulators so you can play on your computer and online - Tabletopia and Tabletop Simulator play both traditional games and many modern ones.
And then you can play tabletop roleplay games, from the classic D&D to modern alternatives like Starfinder, Call of Cthulhu or Warhammer.
And if you want a more gentle, puzzle oriented game you can play by yourself or with friends, you could try Railroad Ink
We often play games, the current favourite is actually over 30 years old but a remake: survive escape from Atlantis. The first time playing with new people every is quite polite, then a second game is requested and it’s a war! I wasn’t really into the ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ scene, but my mate / neighbour was... he did try a few times though.Lots of good modern games listed on here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I can just remember, loads of little groups scattered around the school huddled, muttering & flicking through various volumes of God knows what... each to their own I suppose.
The Games Workshops still freak me out... as I scurry by.
I think the ‘ Big Bang Theory’ portrayed it a few times.

We often play old style games when we go away on holiday.
