Only one mention of Mahjong! I learnt to play with my mother, she used to have an ivory and jade set from her youth in India, incredible carving on the tiles. Now in the process of teaching my partner, lovely game!

Do you do the proper scoring, or just play until you have a winner like we do?

I think the scoring instructions take up about 90% of the instructions booklet.

I only ever found a couple of computer versions and only one for the iOS - every other search comes up with the crappy tile-matching games.

How do you get a winner without scoring it? Just emptying your hand loses a lot of the skill of what sets to collect.

Lol! Brings back so many memories. My mother spent her childhood in India during World War 2 and leant the game there and all its superstitions. I digress, yes I do score games. It’s not necessarily the player who calls mahjong with the highest score. Not 100% sure I’m correct on my scoring but here goes

2 points any pair
4 points a triple lower tiles
8 points a triple major tiles
12 points four lower tiles ( this goes to 16 points if you’ve picked three from the wall and one discarded or 24 if all from the wall )
16 points four major tiles ( this increases as above to 24 and 32 )
8 points for each of your own flower tiles or 4 points for others.

In addition there’s doubling of points for :

All the same suite (?)
All major tiles
Having your own wind tiles
4 identical dragons
Calling mahjong

Calling mahjong with heavenly twins ( seven pairs ) earns 1000 points if the last tile is a discarded tile or 2000 if you pick the last tile from the wall.
The same score is awarded to any of the other multitude of hands you can call mahjong with ie one of each major tile and one pair.

I’ve probably missed something but hope it helps or makes sense.

It depends on which members of the family are playing.

So to appease most of the casual family players, we just count the number of rounds won - so effectively making it a rummy type game...some times with declared bonuses based on a random tile pulled out of the wall at the beginning of a round, or for picking up a season or flower tile.

For a few others we do exponential doubling for pungs...kongs, and again if they're made of 1s and 9s, etc.

I hate board games with a passion, and we've got loads of the things. I try to keep them hidden as occasionally the kids might want to drag them out, the only one that I'll play with any enthusiasm is Cluedo.

If we're going back over old games I used to play "Speed" with my Grandma, I guess it's an early top trumps, Pepys produced a few card games based on the same format "Round the World" being one of them. We couldn't find the original set after she passed away but they pop up on ebay now and then and I've got a couple of sets.

I am trying to remember the name of a Pirate board game I used to play as a child.
You had a little pirate ship that moved around the board and you got to collect loot and plunder other ships I think. There were little gems and gold bars that you could load your ship up with.

I suspect that would have been buccaneer.

Bagatelle was the earliest game I remember playing with an old biddy who herself had it for years.

Still get it out nowadays and most people have a few rounds and love it.... always someone who gets hooked for hours trying to beat their score etc.

I like getting a new game like this every Christmas that at least for an hour gets everyone off their phone/tablet/computer game whatever.

ffs, this is Pistonheads! wink

Came out in 1964 the year after the Imp launch, it came with the dice, cup and 6 little plastic Imps!
If you have it, can fetch decent money if 'complete'.

We've got friends who have Scoop, we occasionally play it when we go camping, it seems to be one of those games where if you get on a losing streak, you get hammered, and the kids get upset smile
