[Beard mode] Did Martin Donnelly ever race at Le Mans?

Peter Dumbreck had a Mercedes Group C car perform a back flip on the Mulsanne, as did Mark Webber.

You were spot on about Roger Dorchy and the WM-Peugeot. It was another of those occasions when the French didn't have much, if anything, to shout about in terms of the overall race, so they decided to have a shot at the highest speed on the Mulsanne.

See also "Index of Performance", another cobbled-up opportunity for a French car to win "something" at Le Mans.[/Beard mode]

Artnoon, all.

Bow 'unting you say? They're in the wrong place for that. A quick galnce at gooooogle maps tells me it's in East London. What do I win?

Day off today. Been into town to get my tutu tattoo finished off. Lost count of how many hours but it's somewhere in the order of twenty. Ironing, a quick play on my eggs box then off to collect son number one. Byeeeeee.

Hah hah! They wouldn't dare tangle with a sweaty Magoo wielding a bloody great sledgehammer! evil

Sounds like they were on a bit of a wild goose boar chase.
There were plenty of them where we stayed in Turkey, they were roaming about in the woods at night in large famoly groups: Dad, Mum, varying sizes of youngsters, and a little runt bringing up the rear, desperately scrabbling up the earthen bank at the side of the track, trying to keep up with the rest. Cute.

But dangerous to mess with.

IOTN, For those interested I have unearthed a short video about the WM P87/88 and their quest to beat the 400kph barrier:

I should have added "iirc", because it was a long while ago, and my head is a bit fuzzy ( on the inside wobble
)

I bow to your superior recollective powers, D O'L

"I stand corrected" said the man in his new orthopaedic shoes.

I do remember one of the Jags shed it's complete rear fairing on the Mulsanne at one time. It went sailing high up into the air and came down like a falling leaf.
Quite spectacular, and no doubt caused some sphincters to clench like they'd never clenched before!

20 hours of iron-on tattoos?

Sounds painful, but I'm sure the Scrump enjoys applying them to his Scrungeon incumbents. evil

Supposed to be leaving for Classic Le Mans early Thursday with my son, who's just dropped out because his wife came back from Glastonbury with Covid! Looks like I'm on my own in the car, but at least camping with friends.
That's bad luck, Byker. frown
Glastonbury was always bound to be a covid superspreader event, as will all the other festivals and gatherings now going forward, because people have just assumed it's safe to do whatever now, have completely dropped their guard, and are not taking sensible precautions.
Sadly, there will inevitably be further spikes this summer and autumn.

One thing that made me chuckle after we landed at Loo Nairpaw was the cabin announcement to "please respect the other passengers' health and safety by ensuring social distancing" as we disembarked.
This was after close to 300 of us had all been cooped up together in the big A320 tin can for almost 7 hours, rebreathing the same recycled air whilst sitting rubbing shoulders and with minimal spacing between the rows of seats.
All the Omicrons must be having a right old laugh...

Enjoy your trip to Le Mans Classic, remember to brake for the chicanes along the Mulsanne, and keep it sanitary! wink
Friends going to Le Mans with us have literally been sweating the last week, because they came back from foreign holiday with covid, didn't test clear until last friday...They think they must have got it from the plane.

At least all of Le Mans is outdoors, hopefully sunburn is all I've got to contend with.

Friend of a friend we've had meals out with is there engineering on a classic F1 car...

I was there in '89, '90 and '91. For me, the Group C era was "peak" Le Mans - such a variety of cars (Sauber Mercedes, Porsche 962, Jaguars, that Aston Martin which made the ground shake every time it went past, the shrieking Mazdas in '91, and eclectic one-offs such as the WM-Peugeot and a 10-litre thing from the US of A which would have been the largest engined car to ever run at Le Mans if it had ever actually run.

Great times.

Then the FIA started buggering about with it. I often think that the ACO should be left to their own devices when it comes to Le Mans.

ION, I have just spent a pleasant afternoon wandering around Hythe Marina, Hampshire's very own Monaco minus the money, the main points of difference being that Hythe doesn't have a Casino, and Monaco doesn't have as many charity shops. Apart from these minor differences, the two are barely distinguishable from each other.

IOON, tomorrow I will be taking the mighty Up! back to my local VW dealer for them to have a look at the two issues which I asked them to look at last week when it was serviced. I may practice my "quietly assertive" face this evening in anticipation.

I've seen Mallards tattoo. It's individual and impressive! I like it very much.

I've always been a tattoo fan but never had one. I've been to many tattoo shops with pals in past years but just never had one.
I've been threatening for years to go big with a full back crucifix along with yer man nailed up on it along with as many religious references that can be fitted in. Dark deep n moody would be the theme with coloration taken from the 12 stages.

We had a mobile grandstand at Maison Blanche in '89. It was a huge roof rack on my old Range Rover. Sitting on it for hours on folding chairs I discovered I could feel the Astons approaching. My diaphragm would vibrate long before I heard the engine.

smile

Good times.

I trust you won't make good that threat, old chap? Tattoos are for matelots, usually showing an anchor and the name of their beloved above, and should be illegal for anyone not a signed up seafarerer whether or not, in the Navy!! Harrumph..... whistle

Yes yes
Don't worry, hammo, you can now luxuriate in the fantastic fuel economy of the Flying "B".

I agree with you about the whole Le Mans thing.

It's the getting there, the atmosphere, the whole OCCASION, the partying, the revelry, the rivalry the ribaldry, the multiple nationalities, the racing through the night, the sun coming up in the morning, the sights, sounds and smells, there's nothing else quite like it!
And the memories linger on for years and years...

I was so glad to have been there in 1988. That race was something special cloud9
