All the top 4 grocers are now doing (or will be doing) member specific pricing.

Tesco Clubcard
Sainsbury's Nectar
Asda Rewards
Morrisons "More"

Even COOP are doing it.

I dislike data harvesting as much as anyone but it's not forced and as mentioned even without club card membership they already know much about you.

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned but there's also club card plus or whatever it's called. 8 quid a month for a 10% discount on two shops. We recently signed up for the trial as we'll easily save more than that.

I also dislike how certain items that we buy regularly can randomly disappear from Tesco's shelves but since we do the bulk of our food shop there joining club card is a bit of a no brainer. We still buy elsewhere too including the local butcher but Tesco have a large free car park with easy access and within a short driving distance. The same can't be said for the local Sainsbury's, Lidl etc. so until and unless someone else provides the same we'll likely keep shopping there.

We don't really bother with online shopping as my wife likes going to the store but if we did we'd have more choice of suppliers.

ETA, one thing that does annoy me is that data reception is pretty shoddy in the store we go to so using their app can be a pain in the hole smile. It's needed to use the 10% discount but I always take a physical card for the days it sits spinning doing nothing. Their older apps didn't have the same problem, the new one is obviously doing much more data access and someone needs to work on its responsiveness when lookups are slow.

No, it is not discrimination. The cards are free and you are not restricted from having one.

The data farming that goes on? Well, good luck avoiding that in the modern world.
All of that, you're data is being sold and used by dozens of companies at any time. Might as well get some cheap oat milk out of it.

Exactly that. I don't understand the tin-foil hatters, worried about their shopping habits being 'abused'. Maybe they're worried that 'Big Milk' will inject their weekly supply of semi-skimmed with mind-controlling bots.

I can understand the dislike of profiling but not taking out a club card isn't exactly going off the grid.

We're not long back from a Tesco shop over lunch. Our 110'ish bill would have been 27 pounds more without club card membership. It would be silly in my view to pay that 27 quid to think you're not being profiled. That wasn't chasing offers either, most of our shop is identical week to week. Although if it's a choice between two similar items and one's on offer we'll pick that one. Although I will be trying Tescos low salt own brand beans for the first time ever some day this week as my wife insisted on that offer vs my usual Branston smile.

Agreed on the new app being a pain in the rear.

For last few years we've been getting the ONS vouchers for bring part of a Covid trial, and we have converted these into Tesco digital gift cards to buy stuff for the food bank.

The old system was great and reasonably quick, even though as above the signal can be dodgy.

After the last two shops glad the Covid trial has ended as the app was so unresponsive and added various steps into the process just to rub salt into things.

I've got a picture of the barcode saved on my phone for if the data doesn't work.

I think that works for the club card but guessing not if you use the app to pay too as the barcode/qr code refreshes on an interval. I don't know if it's still the case but the reason we started using the app to pay was they allowed larger contactless payments via their own app. Another way of encouraging its use.

A bit off topic, but my local Tesco Extra recently closed its fresh fish counter, so now you can only buy the limited selection of prepacked fish. I thought maybe it was closed for a refit but it appears to be permanent. Then I heard from my Dad that his Tesco 50 miles away had done the same. I suppose I should be patronising a proper fishmonger anyway...

Still on the go in ours but unfortunately that is the way of it. They cut back on the butcher section massively years ago so I wouldn't be surprised to see the same happen to the fish counter. It's already quite small.

I do buy local via the local butcher but there are no fishmongers anywhere near me that I know of. There's a wholesale option as we're in driving distance of a fishing harbour. I wouldn't eat enough to bulk buy though.

Ah I've never done that because apple pay has limitless contactless anyway.

The world changes without me changing my habits smile. I still carry cash, cards and driving license, the younger ones working for me don't even carry a wallet.

I once bought an expensive work laptop on Apple Pay contactless. The Apple Store were happy to take it. But at the time I'm fairly sure Tesco were still limiting contactless to 30 quid. I was a bit stunned the Apple Store was happy for me to use the phone and also a bit stunned how easy it was to see the money vanish smile. I'm well aware that it's more secure than a card due to the authentication required but I think stores can still set their own limits on what they'll accept.

I know my Tesco credit card will still limit the size of the contactless transaction as I've had to insert and use the pin on most shops when I've used it. I've just read that they don't limit Apple payments on the same card. I'll have to test that out and thanks for something I didn't know.

In our local Tesco they have lost, fresh fish counter, fresh meat counter, delicatessen counter.

What we do have now is a Yo Sushi counter. It is not good. Tried two things, very poor. Currently offering a meal deal, £10 for what amounts to full price £20 worth. Not even going to look what's on offer, as it's so rank.

Sticks.

I use a Tesco credit card (for everything) which doubles up as a Clubcard.

The medium sized Tesco nearest me closed the deli a few years ago and the similar-sized Waitrose has closed the bakery, fish and butcher's section as well as the cafe and toilets.

Yikes. Thankfully not in ours yet.

The deli counter loss (my username is not artificial) annoyed me in ours. Now it's a load of pre-packaged cheeses and meats where the counter used to be. Some of them are tasty admittedly. But they haven't reworked the store layout so behind it is still where the people who used to work there stood but now with the lights turned off. We've also moved to self scan as you shop as they've massively cut the number of people working the checkout area and the queues can be terrible at times. The only fast way out is self scan and hope you don't get randomly selected to watch your shop being scanned by someone who doesn't pack it back properly. I'm a fussy packer and cringe every time that happens at the poor repacking, my wife finds my annoyance hilarious which makes it worse knowing that she's watching me watching them whilst I'm politely trying to pretend I'm not angry as it's not their fault.

I find the whole micromanaging of cost and making the shopper do what the store used to provide much more annoying than the club card profiling.

They monitor for those buying excess bacofoil, and then slip a covid vaccine into their bleach before they drink it.

same here in well known scottish town known for its fishing and no fish counter then lost rotisserie section then deli section now all stacked with packaged foods instead must save tescos a lot in staffing etc as otherwise they would not do it
clubcard is essential for shopping as without it prices are ludricously high

Agreed, the yo sushi counter is expensive and rubbish.

I never ever shopped at the meat and fish counters, I always assumed that it was the same as the pre-packed stuff on the shelf, but laid out nicely and with a premium added.

Everyone is doing it. First party data is basically vital for any business to survive now given cookies on chrome will be gone soon and really the only way to meaningfully know anything about your customers will be what you hold on them yourself.

Having worked for the data arm of one of the big supermarkets - it’s incredible how powerful it is and how compelling it is as a platform for suppliers to advertise and also buy access to the data to better know their own consumers. And most important for the retail brand - it’s high margin vs food.
