I only go to tesco once in a blue moon (if you exclude fuel) and went the other day. They stock a few things that I use rarely so its convenient to call in if we need stuff and I am getting fuel.

Walked round for half an hour and then noticed the club card price thing was on almost everything. In the past its just been wine and the occasional "deal" item, non of which I was buying. Had to leave my trolley and go back to the car to get the club card as I left it in the car after buying petrol.

My grand total was £55. Then I forgot to scan the bl0ddy club card!!! FFS!!!
Luckily the guy on the self check out was able to sort it and the new total..£46.

Thats why people are complaining about this. Its not just pence, its actually a good chunk of money. For what I bought it was almost 20%.
And you can bet that it's not the profits of Tesco that are taking the hit for this. That's why I too consider it penalty pricing not reward pricing. It stinks.

But what's to complain about?

If they gave a discount for a different method of payment, like having their own credit card, I can see the issue, but for a free loyalty card they'll just give you? It's not one to get wound up about.
My points, some of which are just my opinion

Some people might not have a club card, or any clue how to get one. Be it language barrier, issues with technology etc.
Price inflation. The CC price is the regular price.
Giving "discounts" is keeping people on the hook because they say look I "saved" £10 on my £50 shop.
The small % of customers who forget their club card and say fu(k it its only a few quid. Multiply by thousands of customers a day.

Thats why people are moaning. IMHO.

Marks and Spencer’s now at it.

For years the BBQ food or breaded chicken and fish for 3 for £10, then it went up to 3 for £12 in about 2019/2020

But now if you have a sparks card you can get it for 3 for £10 again.

They’ve also done it on some products such as a new wine they’ve bought out

Watch out for the snowball. They are all starting to do it now.

I'll still buy from M&S but only items where the price is equal for all customers.

If you forget your clubcard and pay full price, you can get a partial refund if you take your receipt & clubcard to customer services when you are next in store.

Why only a partial refund?

If it was a full refund, you would be getting it for free smile

They refund the difference between what you paid and "clubcard price"

The wording suggested to me that you only got a partial refund of the difference the CC price and the non-CC price. If you get the full difference refunded then it's not partial. Anyway, semantics.. we're on the same page now.

My local Sainsbury's has just added it too - special prices only for Nectar card owners.

Plus you can't get out of the store now after paying unless you scan your receipt to open the barriers at the self-checkout, so they must be expecting lots of theft as a result.
Rough area? biggrin

Exactly how I'd describe the supermarkets engaging in this kind of thing... Ultimately driving customers towards cut price supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl who's business model does not support such things as tiered pricing.

This is a race to the bottom I'd rather not experience (again... seen it happen in Australia first hand).

The discount lot will move towards this model too, was years ago I first spoke to Lidl about this sort of thing, they’ll get there - you cannot run a business while knowing nothing about your customers in this day and age.

Exactly.

I fully understand that the "clubcard special price" is just the old "normal price" and the deal just brings it back down. Tesco haven't really given me a discount, but they are trying to make me think they are.

I sometimes forget me clubcard. No problem, I just don't buy anything on a clubcard deal today. I'll be coming back in a day or two anyway (I walk there and back so limited to what I can carry) so I'll get the discounted stuff then.

Non-clubcard offers. Such as the merry-go-round reductions on Kenco Millicano coffee. There is ALWAYS a deal on that product somewhere. We occasionally shop at Waitrose, M&S, and Sainsburys as well as our local Tesco. One of them will have the deal, can't always find it. Worked out that if I buy two cans whenever I see it reduced there's a high percentage chance the deal comes round agin in Tesco before I've run out. Plenty of similar products too.

Pence per 100 grams/ml. I've got better at mental maths lately. Quite often the spreadable butter I prefer (Country Life) is cheaper by weight than even heavily discounted packs of Anchor. One way suppliers and supermarkets seem to like to muddy the waters is to put their deals on slightly non-standard packs, so there's no direct comparison of one 500g pack with another. I'm OK doing the x2, /3 thing to work out the best value, but not everyone is capable, or can be bothered. This way the "con" is customers believe they've nabbed a bargain, when another product is actually cheaper. See also "refill packs more expensive by weight/volume than the package you're trying to refill" and "larger packs actually more costly by weight/volume than smaller packs" meaning folk presume the larger volume pack is better value and buy it, costing them more. Good recent example being 1.25 litre bottles of Pepsi. They always used to be a more expensive option than the 2 litre bottles but I spent the time multiplying and dividing and found their price on a 'Two For xx' clubcard deal was better than a similar 'Two For xx' deal on the bigger bottles.

Whilst I agree it's a doddle to get and carry a loyalty card, the pricing differences are sometimes quite sneaky. Not a problem for me to spend time (I have plenty on my hands) working that out for myself, but some are intimidated by the thought of mental maths, are too distracted (by kids or work phonecalls while shopping), or just too time pressured to actually do it in store. That, I think, is the root of much displeasure with supermarket pricing, whether it's "loyalty" deals or just their regular pricing policies.

They know exactly what sells and what doesn't , as people on this thread have said, you're telling them nothing they dont already know to conduct their business, They just want to sell your info to other hawkers of tat.

The deal used to be - use our customer purchase tracking card and we'll reward you with a discount making it cheaper than had you bought these items elsewhere.

I'd be fine with that.

But this is more akin to - use the tracking card or we will fine you.

I don't like it and so far have found places to shop which don't come with that level of discomfort.

I don't have a problem with them wanting shopping data, I just feel it's gone from work with us to you'd better do this or else.

So suit yourself.

I have a Tesco credit card which is also a loyalty card.

Tap once for loyalty card, tap again for credit card. It's not complicated.

Do you remember when in your teens or twenties, when you went out, there was always someone who could find trouble, the rest of us always managed to avoid it, he could always find it. This is exactly the same principle.

Do we not have an expensively run QUANGO we fund with our taxes to find out if this is fair to customers?

The data they gather will be used against you once they gathered enough of it.

Enjoy the discount while it lasts.
