Some stunning pictures above from those nutters who live and frequent the proper hills.

Gad, you are a proper nutter, and I mean that in the nicest possible way!

Chesterfield'ish -

Got very cold last night and what had half melted quickly turned to ice. It was really quite dangerous when I took the dog out, but not as dangerous as spending the night in a stone hut up on the moors.

Today it is melting a bit more, but is cloudy and also spitting with yet more snow! whistle
I admit that on the way up there I was questioning some of my life choices. We went in from the West because this was planned ages ago and that is the shorter route in. What we didn't factor in was that the wind was easterly. So it was 2 hours of facial shot blasting. I had fully frozen eye brows when we got there.

Yesterday was glorious though. Early cloud and wind disappeared leaving lovely unspoilt snow and blue skies. A bit hard work ploughing through the drifty bits but it was great.

Spent Thursday night in Greg’s hut on the Pennine way. It was a pretty wild hike in but very much worth it.

Roads home were clear but only just!

Back at home in Durham dales area. lovely conditions.

I think that is deserving of a thread of it's own!

Just back from a trip out in The Fens and despite no rain/snow over the last 36 hours all the usual places are flooded to winter levels.

Despite what is reported that we need the rain(?), the forecast precipitation for the next week could cause flooding issues for the area

We must have had a lot of rain in MK over night last week. We had a bit of snow and one day it rained heavily in the evening. The local river was so low you could see the bed last week and yesterday it was very close to bursting its banks. Looks like a lot of rain forecast next week so I will be needing my waterproof boots on the dog walk.

Lots of pictures of snow drifts. Anyone beat Buxton's 12" of fallen snow over the weekend? I was in Austria where it dumped 6" hehe

Listening to the local radio (Oxfordshire/Wiltshire border) last week when we had a light dusting of snow, a suitable "expert" was wheeled in to chat about the weather.
The presenter asked if 100mm of snow was the same as 100mm of rain? Expert said it was. Surely not, snow will pile up antwhere while water will move about on the ground, that is to say, puddle. Or even soak in to the ground. Is there a correlation between depth of snow and amount of rain?

I thought there was a 12-1 ratio? An inch of rain is a foot of snow?

I'm sure a grownup with some actual knowledge will be along shortly....

AIUI it's 1mm=1cm, but I'm now wondering how accurate that is as it looks like a rule of thumb adapted for the units.

Yes the view did change very quickly from white back to green/brown, it was between 12 and 3. Didn't your weather station record it and possibly a change of wind direction?
There is a lot of water about now naturally....

All I am noticing now is how windy it is. Glad I’m not in anything high sided today.

Woken up this morning to rain here in the Peak District. We had around a foot of snow over the weekend and 99% of it has now melted.

I'm guessing town is now on flood watch.

Most of the snow has melted overnight in here in Aberdeenshire, I got woken up by the rain on the window this morning.
Looks like there may be more snow this afternoon and tomorrow with -3 tonight, which should make the roads quite interesting.

Rule of thumb is indeed that 1mm of rain = 1cm of snow, but there are some large variations possible due to what type of snow falls, temperature, humidity etc. More likely to be downwards towards 1mm of rain = 6mm of snow.

Looking forwards? No sign of a warm spring. Cold blasts from the north and some Atlantic weather (as we are currently 'enjoying'). Scotland to bear the brunt of this cold spell while the south remains miserably cool.

May I ask which Fens? Up here in the Eastern part of Lincolnshire some of the drainage channels are looking pretty full.

The Fens in Cambridgeshire. I witnessed the same as what you are seeing, and as well as the increase in the amount of water over the last few days was my reason for posting the observation.

As a resident of the Fens I can confirm some ground water, mostly caused by the 40 or so mm of rain we received in 24 hours ontop of the 3 or so inches of snow that it washed away. But dont worry the wind is blowing it all away at the moment hehe

Properly windy today, so much so the roof is creaking under the stronger gusts, sadly our weather station cant keep up with the gust strength but occasionally flashes around 35mph but I am not sure how accurate that is. I know the wind is strong enough for the wind turbines to be off.

Some chance of snow today, particularly on the western side of the Pennines, N Wales, western Scotland.
