A vulgar display of wealth...

it is funny really, i remember the wealthy ones were the ones that wore old clothes, drove older cars, very humble, went to cheap shops, had no issues drinking with the normal people. Retired on 6 figs in the bank and still lived like that. Really feels like the whole system has upended and making sure you are not seen as frugal is now a bad thing, people are now just their objects.
This is a corny old stereotype - there have always been different approaches to wealth and conspicuous consumption. Look at the Georgians and Victorians! WhiskyDisco said:

Rolls Royce Cullinan.
I've only seen 1 on the road and I couldn't help but think the woman driving it looked like a right plonker.
Phantom is a different kettle of fish.

You don't like watches then?
I am in awe of the skill and ingenuity that was involved making them in the 18th century, solving the latitude problem and that sort of thing, but I am mostly indifferent to watches as a hobby/interest. My post was intended as a light-hearted ribbing of this kind of behaviour:TTR6 said:

I saw one last year outside the Aston Martin dealership in Wilmslow. It was so massive it did not fit in the parking space on the road. There was a traffic warden looking at it, clearly pondering whether he could issue a ticket for that reason.(shes right, he agreed)

I especially like it when people strap their fake Rolex over the top of their jumper cuffs.

I have to admit, like hypercars costing 8-10 million, I mean when did this become acceptable, it is getting pretty grotesque.. It is like having megawealth is lorded.
I would be curious where do you sit on classics that would dwarf the price of something like Chiron, Pagani etc?To a degree its just taste. My taste is that I think all the latest hypercars seem to just be ever more in your face, expensive to be expensive tasteless rubbish. But if you rolled up in a Bugatti Atlantic I would think you are the coolest guy in the car park, despite it being a far more grotesque show of wealth at 30 million plus.
Its always been going on an McLaren F1 was obnoxiously expensive in its day. I suppose you could say they where built with purpose as opposed to just be expensive trinkets.
I do agree that w seemed to have reached a pretty mad level of consumption. Like a Chinese friend of mine when he lived in London was getting told by his mother to go into Hermes to buy certain bags, one in each colour!! To send back because you couldn't get them in China. He was getting lists of stuff running well in to 6 figures at a time. I do find that level of consumption uncomfortable.
I would say the vast majority of people who are wealthy show little of it to the outside world.
Those that do are probably not that wealthy and if they are they are not the sort of people anyone would want to know as they are probably horrendously selfish, vapid and unpleasant..
I am happy to know one or two of the former and there is nothing about them that screams wealth other than a slightly nicer car than most and a bigger house, yes they holiday about 4 times a year, but who cares.
I do not know anyone who is the latter, i would like to think I would disown them instantly

I find it with "old wealth" vs "new wealth". Noobs NEED you to know they are wealthy, or aspirational of wealth. Those who have it, have had it for their lifetime and probably since great grandpa's time, are more mellow about it and happy to crack on with life. Those that do are probably not that wealthy and if they are they are not the sort of people anyone would want to know as they are probably horrendously selfish, vapid and unpleasant..
