A vulgar display of wealth...

we've got the 'council' thread for a bit of light-hearted fun - can we up-scale it somewhat and have the whole 'council' attitude but with the funds to flaunt their complete lack of taste?
your starter for (or in this case your starter for £98,000 )
I knew I'd seen this watch somewhere recently. One of the husbands on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills was wearing one - utterly vulgar monstrosity.your starter for (or in this case your starter for £98,000 )
I'm not a regular viewer of RHOBH.. honest!

I saw one last year outside the Aston Martin dealership in Wilmslow. It was so massive it did not fit in the parking space on the road. There was a traffic warden looking at it, clearly pondering whether he could issue a ticket for that reason.
Issuing a ticket or wondering whether it should be paying council tax? They are humongous. However, very lovely inside so swings and roundabouts!

That could be a photo (and probably is) from a BT&P or similar!
I have a friend who bought a new bed and accoutrements for £24k. He said it was like me paying £700 and I said "£700 for a bed!"
Bed or mattress? £700 on a mattress could well be money well spent! On a bed frame perhaps not.I have a friend who bought a new bed and accoutrements for £24k. He said it was like me paying £700 and I said "£700 for a bed!"

I would be curious where do you sit on classics that would dwarf the price of something like Chiron, Pagani etc?
To a degree its just taste. My taste is that I think all the latest hypercars seem to just be ever more in your face, expensive to be expensive tasteless rubbish. But if you rolled up in a Bugatti Atlantic I would think you are the coolest guy in the car park, despite it being a far more grotesque show of wealth at 30 million plus.
Its always been going on an McLaren F1 was obnoxiously expensive in its day. I suppose you could say they where built with purpose as opposed to just be expensive trinkets.
I do agree that w seemed to have reached a pretty mad level of consumption. Like a Chinese friend of mine when he lived in London was getting told by his mother to go into Hermes to buy certain bags, one in each colour!! To send back because you couldn't get them in China. He was getting lists of stuff running well in to 6 figures at a time. I do find that level of consumption uncomfortable.

We test a lot of cars at work (often for conformity of production) and you always always always knew the ones going to China.
Rolls, Bentley, McLarens in the most lurid colours with clashing interiors with odd materials. Absolutely brilliant.

I find it with "old wealth" vs "new wealth". Noobs NEED you to know they are wealthy, or aspirational of wealth. Those who have it, have had it for their lifetime and probably since great grandpa's time, are more mellow about it and happy to crack on with life.
This idea originates from the rise of the merchant class in the 1800's. Once being stinking rich was no longer the preserve of the aristocracy, and indeed a Lord might well be poorer than a businessman and more concerned with preserving what he had inherited than enjoying what he had created, conspicuous displays of wealth began to be considered vulgar and "new money" by those who could in reality no longer keep up with them and had to find other ways to look down upon the lower classes.Tango13 said:
I can appreciate the craftsmanship in the top gun but the other two are grotesque monstrosities.
Yes I had to make it relevant to the thread. The Gaddafi one has some history though, and even though it is garish, it is a nice 'piece'.
Just imagine, Mr T levels of gold chains, two Rolexexexexexes on each wrist(maximum wrist time action) and this in a shoulder gun holster . Yes
