Just load your vehicle up and dump it in a country lane...it's what everyone else seems to be doing!

In Hampshire we still have to book, which can be a pest but not the end of the world

The problem I have is my local tip had a 2m height restriction on entrance, which is not there on weekends

I emailed about it and it’s meant to stop vans, which is fine, they explained they will open it if you ask, except they get shirty about it

My car is over 2m high, don’t have time at the wekend.

The old boy next door is a very helpful fella, he helps me out now by processing whatever I have and drip feeding it into the bin. I repay him by doing heavy lifting, IT repairs etc

Not been to the tip for a while now

Local transit van based family recently got fined £140 for getting caught on camera fly numerous times

What they tipped would have cost more than £140 at the tip!
I have to ask but what is your car that is over 2m high ?

Where we are now EVERYTING is free
It really isn't.
And yet according to Buckinghamshire Council

You can take many household items to a recycling centre for free. This includes:...
Free at the point of use.

Such facilities are not provided though altruistic endeavour. They cost money to operate and that money comes from the tax payer - you!
Buckinghamshire Council charges a st load for DIY rubbish but says some stuff like furniture is "free" their words.

I know that "free" means I have paid into the general pot but due to circumstances I probably won't get much back myself and that's life.

You know what I mean when I say "free"

Hire a skip
170 quid a time.
But it's the correct way to do it.

Council tip is really for the odd item but if you have a significant DIY job then skip is the proper way. I guess that's why the council had to put this rule in or they could have increased the council tax to account for the extra disposal cost.
The 'proper' way? rofl Making it harder to dispose of domestic waste creates an increase in flytipping, which costs councils far more than running customer friendly tips.

I posted this a few years ago but it’s worth repeating.
I removed a broken fridge from my camper van, size size about half the size of a standard kitchen fridge. maybe even smaller than that.
I struggled and unloaded it from my car whilst yellow jacket man watched me. Then I put the fridge with some other white goods on the site, then yellow jacket tells me there’s a charge for that mate.
Really, says I, how much. He tells me £60!!!
I loaded it back in my car and left.
Then at home I studied the charges applicable at the site, no mention of fridges on the list. I sent an email to the ountry Council asking for clarity and explained the situation.
Reply came back a few days later, operatives being re-trained on charging elements and take your fridge back to the site, you will not be challenged, which I did.
How to pocket cash and lose your job.

Tricky one, it’s classed as a car usually, it’s got 5 seats in in, but it’s not a mini bus

Long story short, I now dont bother going to the tip and it all goes in the bin. Just another mildly frustrating rule where discretion should help not hinder me

My local council (Kirklees, West Yorkshire) tip is great. You have to register your car (up to two per household, which I dutifully have done but I've never actually been checked) but other than that you can turn up as often as you need to, and it's open Saturday and Sunday. They even take old car tyres.

I realise this is no help to you OP, but I wanted to bring some balance and say that they aren't all bad
Same here, also West Yorkshire. I pay council tax to Bradford but the local Leeds tip is closest and the local MPs agreed that we can use it in a rare race towards common sense. No booking.

No car tyres though, I need to pay £3 per tyre. No big deal.

The situation you have is that tradesmen and builders are expensive. Moving house is expensive. People are deciding that they can save a lot of money and do it themselves.

Suddenly, "domestic waste" is two to three skips of building work. Councils are now overwhelmed and have to find a solution. They start charging to cover the costs or ration the number of runs. Government have told councils that they have their own funding and have to find solutions themselves.

By doing all the building work yourself, you end up saving a ton of cash but you are now complaining that hiring a skip costs money. Think about how much money you have saved plus the increase in value you have added to your house. The cost of a skip is negligible in comparison.

Caravelle is great for tip runs as its under 2m and flys under the barrier at our tip. Oddly the rules at ours say if its a factory 7 seater you are fine, 5 seater is a no no. Had a jobsworth at mine refuse me entry as i generally run mine with only 5 seats. I went home slid the 2 missing seats back in and went back. He pulled me again at the gate giving it " i told you once you cant come in with that van" i slid open the side door and suggested he recounted the seats. He sat back in his hut and wouldn't talk to me as i carried on through. biglaugh

We already pay the council for these services - it’s called council tax. Thousands of pounds.

And please don’t say “but that’s not fair on those that don’t use the tip” - sadly it’s not a “pick ‘n mix” thing; I can’t have money back because I haven’t got kids at school etc etc.

The site I use on the edge of SE London is better than it was before Covid. Smarter and better laid out than it was with no roll-ups, Daily Star or diversity courses.
