That's a very big hat, he must have been in charge. I sometimes wonder if half the problem with the modern british forces is the lack of really big hats; no one knows who is in charge. hehe

He was 6'4" tall so must have been knocking 7 foot in that hat, pretty intimidating I reckon. biggrin

That's some incredible family history you have got there. He's straight out of an old war movie.

It appears to be an officer cadet or Fähnrich dress uniform(not surprising for a photo like that), although that's google talking rather than me.

It looks like a WW2 German Army 'Cavalry / Reconnaissance Section' tunic - looks more like an Unteroffizier (UK corporal equivalent) rather than a Fahnrich or Unterfeldwebel as the epaullet trim, known as an NCO tress bar is absent across the base of the strap as it is not closed at the flat base. Looks like a unit designator of '67' is also present so may be a good indicator for cavalry focused chaps to help pin down his exact unit (I tend to look at Luftwaffe stuff so Wehrmacht is not quite my bag)

One of the reasons I love PH is the depth of knowledge sometimes is incredible. Well done all.
