Ok, I will probably never get invited to one but have we had a situation where a gender reveal party has been upstaged by those that think the whole activity should be banned? For starters, I thought a child had to get to about three years old before it could decide what gender it was?

Confused.

Any excuse to look popular on instagram (never been invited, and don’t think I will!)

Imo gender reveal parties are a bit chavvy.

Luckily there are quite a few reasons I’d never get to go to one. Partly because I don’t think I know anyone who is stupid or chavvy enough to have one, and think that I’d care, but also because they would be right, I really don’t care.

Who cares enough about someone else's baby's gender that a reveal party is needed? I suspect no-one that couldn't just be told in the usual way.

Just self indulgent posturing in my opinion.

.
Aren't they actually sex reveal parties? (Clue: there are but two sexes, a blue one (apparently) and a pink one).

There used to be 2 genders. Now when completing Goverment surveys, there must be at least 8.

Don't need a party, just need an explanation. It's got too complicated.

That’s because you are confusing gender with sex.

I know several people that are women (gender) that are male (sex).

Also one male (gender) i meet socially that I’m sure is female (sex).

I did go to a gender reveal party a few months ago - I agree its a dreadful American import.

Who cares beyond the parents and possibly the grandparents?

In any case it was okay. Ladies did some running around holding pink/blue balloons, formed two lines…. Music, food, hotel rooftop…… Father to be did his bit. Everyone had a good time.

Like these baby-showers: an American import. Just an excuse as I see it for girls to get together for fun and take millions of photos.

My wife’s various group of friends have at least one event every week that involves food, photos (sometimes with a photographer at the event), getting dressed up, dancing….so this is just one new trend to add to the list.

Tacky - yes. Agreed. Harmless nonsense.

I would have been churlish to refuse to go - good friends of ours.

I must be old fashioned but my (and also my wife's) view is that the gender of your child is one of few real surprises in life. We didn't know the gender of either of our two before they were born.

I don't have an issue with someone wanting to know the gender before the birth but having a party to "reveal" it is just tasteless. Similarly, I find anyone who tells you the name of the unborn child is just odd. We had several possibilities for our kids, kept them to ourselves and only made the final decision once we finally got to meet them.

All of that was us, didn't know the gender/sex until both popped out (however I understand parents who want to know just don't make a song and dance about it) and names were kept to ourselves until the day of birth.

Agree gender reveals are just tacky and tasteless, it's all about the parents wanting to show off and to be the centre of attention. A friend of ours there was one on her road all recorded for Instagram and FB, the road was temporarily closed, 2 men dressed up in shark costumes, 1 pink the other blue and they had a fake race along said closed road with faux jeopardy, pretend slow motion, the odd fake stumble thrown in and if course whatever colour was the winner was the "gender reveal", utterly tacky, cringe and just about being the centre of attention.

The daughter of a workmate was saying on Facebook that her and her partner were doing the reveal the next day. I commented that they were proud Yorkshire folk and shouldn't do it.

Next day, there it is, letting blue balloons out of a bin bag. Only half of them came out. A few Rotherham accented cheers and it looked tacky as hell.

My kids (7 and 4) also have zero photographic presence on social media. I really don't understand parents who feel the need post endless photos of their child for the world to see, it can only be attention seeking. When my kids are old enough (16) they can decide for themselves if they want to waste their time on social media, but I won't do it for them.

Chavtastic.

The Essex side of my family (thankfully 200+ miles away) had one of these parties during the first lockdown.
My sister was given the sealed envelope with gender inside. Prospective parents didn't know what it said. Sister then had to bake and ice a cake with blue or pink sponge.
Gifts and stuff were exchanged, everyone took home Covid & cake. lick

I've never been to one and would go out of my way to avoid it. Such a tacky idea, not for me! Fortunately my wife agrees so when we had our baby earlier this year there was no gender reveal and no baby shower. We found out the gender at our 12 week scan and kept it to ourselves along with the name until the day of the birth.
