I'm another one who has finally read all of this post. I know it started out as an insight on what life in prison was really like. Then ran on as a analysis of driving and accidents. But following 10PS's last posts regarding the mental place he found himself in and how he was taking steps to sort himself out. I was wondering if anyone knows any more, I have found myself more interested and concerned with how 10PS is doing now than any other aspects of this post.
Just read this.
Wow does make you think.
The comments on what other drivers view of your driving is very interesting.
I often overtake on the motorbike and give a small wave to thank them.
However I wonder how for example an old couple in a car would describe it ?
Very very interesting stuff and I'll certainly think about my driving a little more

Wow, well this was a worthwhile way to spend the morning...
I've never had any crashes, I'm quite a timid driver, although not to the extent of being a slow doddery fool, but often I'll find myself carrying corners at 60 on the way home from work and slow down, or watching someone else overtake just before a corner and thing 'fk that, I know how fast I can come round this bit'
2 guys in another forum I'm a member of had a horrific accident last year (http://tinyurl.com/j284agg I've changed the URL as it's from Autoste, which triggers the swear filter), but basically a 'tt' in a bmw was seen driving erratically for miles before hand by several different constabularys, and plouged into the back of the van at 120. We all got up in arms with 'burn the fker' cries, but eventually the chaps mental health issues came to light, and in the end the 2 chaps involved decided to just leave the matter. They were alive, the insurance was taking financial care of them, and their most important point was the family of the guy was already tearing themselves up (apparently they met with the mother and sister, and tears were shed etc).
10ps's story does make me a bit paranoid about being the last car in a queue on a fast b road, or the back of a motorway halt... wheels to the verge, eyes on the rear view mirror etc. It also makes me stuck 2 fingers up to impatient drivers behind me when I'm slowing down for a reason (again on my way to work, there's a right hand turn immediatly after a corner that is perfectly waftable at 50, but to turn right you have to stop as the line of sight up the road is crap until you are right on the junction, so I slow down to 25-30 just in case as I come around the corner, mr 'tourist' behind me gets wound up...well tough, what if?

10p, we have recently taken on a magazine called Rev.UK its aimed at young drivers who have either taken their test or are about to. Its distibuted in sandwell FOC and is also handed out to safty units nationwide.
Should you be interested in having your accounts published in this, please send me an email, it may just save a few young lives.
Please do this. I said at the start that this should be taught to youngsters.Should you be interested in having your accounts published in this, please send me an email, it may just save a few young lives.
I certainly slowed me down.
I have just spent the last few hours reading through this thread, what a remarkable insight into what can happen when things go slightly pear shaped. What an extremely thought provoking and moving read. Hands down one of the best threads I've read on PH.
Another call to sticky it, everyone that hasn't read it should do so.

Wow, what a thread. In the space of a few hours, i have had an education like no other:
1) Do I want to go to prison?
No
2) Do I want to injure anyone?
No
3) Do I want to drive fast anymore?
See answer question (1) and (2).
4) Do I want anyone else to my children to drive fast and possibly injure someone?
No
To do:
1) Sell M5
2) Print this thread off and give it to the teenage son
3) Take both sons go-karting (help them learn there is an appropriate place for speed and crashing hurts (not that i want him to crash, but it is safer than the roads!))
Again wow.

I am also going to reread this thread when I consider a fast rwd car. I lost my 330ci sideways (bad tyres plus rain) and nearly crashed into a motorcycle ironically enough, fortunatly I was going slow enough to correct.
The scariest part about prison for me is I could see myself getting like, 3 months in prison but imagining to me anyway, the things I would have to do to stop being raped/picked on would extend that considerably. Whereas if I went for life, I would have nothing to lose.

Just a bump to say Dan I hope you are doing ok.
Just to post this as well. I have spent too many hours re-reading this thread, as a reminder of how quickly things can change for someone.Unfortunately looking at 10 Pence Short's post history he has been AWOL for a few years now. Can only hope he managed to settle some of his demons.

I agree that this thread should be compulsory reading for all 17 year olds. There was talk at one stage of an article in Max Power/GQ or similar.
Dan, wherever you are I hope you are OK. Also the poor man who was hurt.

Had both sons in a open gokart session at the w/e funnily enough. They came 2nd/3rd behind a young kid who had all the gear and the sponsorship dad. It is good to watch them go round and their confidence start building with the handling of the cart. They get faster and faster until they eventually slide out into a corner or bump into someone. Watching them both race each other is edge of the seat stuff. The older one is methodical, i.e. in the sense that he will try a line, then try another one, looking and searching for the fastest way round. The younger one, just knows and is plain faster. Clearly all inherited!
Oldest one will be 15 this year so still 2/3 years to go before they start road driving but at least this way they get the speed sensations out of their systems.
HTH.
