Wow, thanks for the updates, knowing what is or what is not under that pile of rock and in the underground room must be seriously annoying! I guess you've got as much time as you like to investigate though... I'd probably be out there with a spade right now hehe

Just a quickie CY88

Was there any other hardware of the original rifles lying nearby? The brass butt plates etc?? or even the strap fixings?
I am thinking if not these rifles have been placed in the tunnel in that state rather than rotted away.

Sorry guys NOT shells, more dangerous, bag charges for 105mm howitzers, standard forces issue. AUST may mean for ozzie forces, or filled in ozzie..
So what are they then?
A lot of big guns you don't have the shell supplied stuck in the end of a cartridge with the propellant and primer already in it like you do with small arms ammo. Some you do, but some of them all the bits come separately, there is no cartridge, you just get the various bits that are normally in the cartridge in separate boxes. So to load the gun you put a shell in it, then the propellant, then the primer, close the breech and it's ready to fire. The propellant comes not in a metal case but in a cloth bag. That's what a bag charge is.

Stating the obvious but thats a box from the 60's that would have contained 105mm howitzer high explosive artillery shells...
And why does it say "Aust" - is that Australia confused

Box probably acquired while in the forces as these are superb for keeping things in, and usually get tossed out by gunners after live fire exercises, and get grabbed fast by all and sundry. Have some similar in the cellar.
Remembering when I used to go on family holidays to Jersey as a kid in the 70's the whole island was a bit of a haven for WWII memrobilia hunters and stuff was still findable pretty easily. But the more likely scenario was that St Helier was a bit of a hot bed for military surplus and general military junk type shops I remember that I used to pester my dad to "get something german" and we'd end up in these shops with him saying "nope thats modern stuff and nope thats not german" the places were full of all sorts of junk and it's not unbelievable that things like 1960's Australian munitions boxes would have ended up on the island in amongst the other assorted junk they were importing and flogging to tourists.

A bag charge is the explosive that shoves the warhead out of the barrel, a cylindrical sack, which normally is inert and needs a trigger to fire. the trigger may be a chemical or an electrical one. IIRR the 105 PackHow had both possibilities, electrical and a igniter cap as a back up (Mind you it was 40 years sice I "played" with them....)
hello, all your resident ex artillery gunner here, jmg is quite right in what he is saying about those being packing lists for charges, and that in itself is more worrying as they would have degraded a lot and be more unstable than any unexpended ammo in the bunker systems.

you notice it says there are 2sets of charges, these are used to adjust the power of the blast hence the range of the shot (in conjuunction with the barrell elevation).

i cant say if it was the same then but nowadays the charge bags were different coloured, cy if you come across piles of what look like rotten multicoloured giant tampons then leave well alone.

they burn, hard.

Well really enjoying this thread. Don't know if I have done wrong. But have started a thread on the Time Team forum. http://community.channel4.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8... Thought it might drum up a bit of interest. Feel free to comment on it.This could easily be made into a fascinating be a TV program.

105's were the standard Arty in the Australian Army in the Vietnam days up until quite recently, now we use 155's. The AMF used up 100's of them over there and the bag charges in the boxes would have been used here to re-charge 105 shells here in Aust. The empty boxes would have been sold in Army disposal stores here and obviously exported as well. I have two myself.

Yes you have done wrong, the only use time team would be is to put them in there and roll the boulder back.

BBC came to visit the tunnel yesterday. Took a fair bit of footage. Not sure when they plan to broadcast it, but South West and London news was mentioned, possibly this evening.

With Sky all of the BBC regions are available - go backwards from BBC1 past the radio channels and you will find them

Have now been told that there will be a feature on the 6.30pm News this evening on BBC Channel Islands (Sky Channel 988), but cannot confirm whether it will be shown on Spotlight SW or other BBC news services as it will largely depend on the news in those areas, as it's an "and in other news...." item.
