i've been going through this today, like a lot of people before me i guess. what a fantastic read. not that it needs anymore hitting home but as a fellow cumbrian it's rather poignant reading about familiar roads/places/situations.
did the rest of the diary ever get published? after the move to the open prison?
Not my place to answer but I'll mention to Dan that a few posts have been made in case he misses it.did the rest of the diary ever get published? after the move to the open prison?

I only came across this thread by accident this morning but I have to say what a sobering and well written piece this is. I'd love the OP to post the rest of his diary entries as I'm interested to find out what happens at the end. It's certainly made me think more about my driving and it would be a good read for people that think they're okay to drive home after a 'couple' of pints or those who like to go just 'that little bit' faster.
I actually didn't realise it was 10 Pence Short's story having originally seen the blog posted on another site.
The story is pretty humbling and goes to show how quickly it can go wrong on the road even with the best intentions. It's a good message everyone can learn from. It has changed the way I think about my driving but won't stop me overtaking ditherers or going for a blast providing conditions are right and it's safe. I could say loads more but it's all been said.

Just finished reading this on your blog site and had a "F##k, that could have been me moment". Years ago I used to have spirited drives on Hartside myself (in a quickish Honda to funnily enough) to go to club meets.
I grew up and saw sense after a crash but I if I'd seen this sooner (or something simular, given the timescale from your blog we would be driving around the same time) I wouldn't have taken so many risks. I just hope your lifes getting back on track now.

Just to add my thanks to 10penceshort. The diary does have a positive influence.
I was driving through west London before Xmas in heavy traffic and a motorcyclist tried to find a gap that wasn't there between my car and the one to my left. The traffic was chocabloc and the cars were just edging along.
The motorcyclist scrapped the paint off my door mirror and when I sounded my horn at him, he gave me the finger.
My initial thought was to drive the car at him, ever so slowly mind, but not in a kindly manner you understand. But somewhere in the back of my mind flashed up "Prison Diary."
So I let it go.

It's great that the thread has had a positive influence on your driving but I'm not seeing the connection between a 'spirited drive gone wrong' and 'driver with road rage considering deliberately ramming a motorcyclist'.So I let it go.

think to the consequences of your actions? We are subject to many many influences:-
Ying and Yang and all that. Half of what we do is driven by our subconscious.
Many people underestimate risk and overestimate reward.
Adrenalin plays a part in the way we drive and the way we react. Speeding raises adrenalin levels.
For me it was simple: Na, not worth it.
Multiple influences. I am not a violent person, as a rule.
But I think a glimpse into the consequences of one's actions as provided by the diary, informs.
No more.

OP - Did I just hear you on Radio 2 being interviewed?
Probably. He's bloody everywhere when anything remotely connected to crime/prison/driving is brought up. "My cat likes to walk on the neighbours car and trigger their house security light. Are they in their rights to rape my dog?"
"Hmm interesting question. On the line we have Mr Short."
It's all connected see.
Yes it was him, he got called by them this morning.
I've just had a phonecall to ask, "did I sound old?!" as all you lot said he did last time he was on the radio.
ETA: sorry for my crap spelling etc, trying to comfort a snotty 4 week old at the same time
