I have been threatened with ejection from a pub for defacing their blackboard menu: I was removing the apostrophe from "Pizza's". When I remonstrated with the barman, he said "Oh, pedant's society is it?". To which I replied "no, society of pedants, actually".

Good job I'm large.
hehe Very good.

Does anyone ever have a 'moment of clarity' and realise they've been doing grammar wrong in some way for years?

Part of my job involves writing client site location notes, including where to get water(don't ask). For years I was writing 'cleaner's cupboard' then about two years ago realised this implied there was only one cleaner, and that it should be 'cleaners' cupboards'. D'oh! Though to be fair, no-one except me at work cared, as my boss can barely write.

The one thing I do struggle with is apostrophising (?) words that end with 's', as there doesn't appear to be a hard and fast rule. Example the cars owned by the Jones family.

The Jones' cars?
The Jones's cars?

The second one, for me.

"My bad" ? That doesn't even make sense even if it is an Americanism.

Oh and enjoy your break from the forum, learn some manners while you are away.

One of my faves is the first Mamas and the Papas album, which has 'Mama's and the Papa's' emblazoned across the cover.

Strictly speaking the second one is correct. However, it has become commonly acceptable for the first to be accepted, even when the subject (Jones) is a singular.

I have no bloody idea about apostropohies and the rest of the english language proper like, but having survived 63 years on this earth, can't say it bothers me, (was the apostrophe in the right place?)

Yes, but you spelt apostrophes incorrectly.

That reminds me. I saw an advert on television recently for some music compilation CD and I'm sure it said "Black Eyed Pea's".

In this instance I think the apostrophe denotes a contraction of 'peanises' ?
