With the conviction of the murderer of Jimmy Mizen, his father has some interesting things to say about our society:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7962521....

And on the same day:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7968785.stm

Now I know that 24hr News has a tendency to make us feel that there is more crime, but the level of casual stabbings over trivial matters seems to be escalating out of control....

Agree? Comments?

Agree.

The amount of hostility floating around seems unprecedented.

Not sure about the levels of crime rising, but I'm sure there are more shotings & stabbings then there used to be. In my day, the worst you were gonna be faced with was a fist or maybe a bat. These days it could be anything.

I think part of it is gangs of youths who carry knives and will use them....... They appear to have little respect nor concern about the law.

I reckon it's rising. I don't think it's necessarily the number of crimes, but the level of violence in the fights. Seems to be par for the course now to stamp on heads etc.

20 years ago I was 6, somebody in my class stabbed me in the leg with a pencil so I stabbed him back. I havent had any pencil stabbing related incidents lately so it must be less violent now yes

I'd say a combination of....

The spread of urban street culture;
The spread of political correctness and its debilitating affect on traditional social authority and authority figures;
The dominance of the left-wing in education policy making, the teaching profession and social service type areas;
An increased tolerance towards supposed low level crime by left-wing authority;
The compensation/blame culture;
The proliferation of legal rights without associated legal responsibilities;
The breakdown of traditional social morality;

...is in the vanguard of causes for a more violent Britain

It's more violent because there are no consequences anymore. Well, there are no consequences for the attacker anyway; Only for the victim if they fight back.

I see more random 'lashing out attacks' now then I ever did before, simply because they know they can get away with it.

Where I grew up the natives were shooting each other every other week, lost some good school friends.

I used to watch the riots on a friday night as entertainment biggrin

Doesn't happen now, it's all rather peaceful in my little town.

I would say crime/violence has increased, but not at the level the media would have us believe.

How about you middle class keyboard warriors go and do something about it?

What does that statement imply? Are you not such a person yourself?

The perception of physical violence feels stronger and closer is stronger now. perhaps the drama of the media does not help. News stories are very emotive and kinesthetic and they tend to use language that prays on fear, loneliness and isolation.

Very damaging in many ways

Hehe no Coventry.

Whilst I'd say my experience of violence has gone down one thing people never did was steal off people in the area, now they'd have your patio set as soon as the garden light went off.

I'm glad you would/have intervene in such a situation. I've got into situations with the scum described in your thread, It wasn't nice but you have to take these things on the chin.

Vigilante justice anyone?
