Come to Australia. Anyone can shop at any supermarket.
How terribly common! hehe
I know

I wish we had a waitrose.
Why? confused
Petty snobbery.

When I was last in the UK I was abused by someone I knew for shopping at Waitrose. How was I too know it was an act of class warfare to buy some stuff at the first supermarket within walking distance?
Not petty at all, it is truly amazing how much snobbery exists in the UK and how important it actually is to many people. It really does matter where you live, where you shop, what you wear and most importantly what you drive. It is one of the more insidious aspects of Britain IMO.

That's the thing I was most shocked about.

Here, I shop at Coles, the unemployed guy down the street shops at Coles and the multi millionare shops at Coles (or Woolworths/Safeways). It's just which ever shop is the most convenient, and there is no value judgement attached to your decision.

Sure, some will have a better range of products depending on area, but everything else is basically the same. Which is much healthier for a society imo

Except they're all crap, over-priced and open just enough tills to keep the queues 3 or 4 deep.

Over-priced yes, but again depending on area the quality differs. Our local is a brand new one and is great. Go to a crap area with an old store and your experience will differ.

Exactly. If I stop at the Coles in a dodgy suburb on one approach to my area it is crap, poor range and poor quality. If I go to one on the other approach it is a much higher income area and as such has a better range and better quality fruit and veg

I think you're wrong. I couldn't care less about other people's perceptions. I will quite happily roll up at Waitrose wearing a £1 t-shirt, shorts and sandals, in a car thats worth about 1/100th of my annual income, and plod around the shop looking like a right goon by just about anybody's standards. I couldn't give a flying fk what people think about me, the way I look, or where I shop for that matter. My insistence on using Waitrose is based purely on the fact that every *other* supermarket I've been into, in normal 'daytime hours' resembles a scene from Shaun of the Dead. Furthermore I can't believe the ste that most people in this country seem to accept as fresh food. In my experience buy a packet of tomatos, parsnips, whatever from Morrisons, Asda, Tesco, etc. and they last about 2 days if you're lucky. Same stuff from Waitrose lasts a week or more, tastes better and costs marginally more if anything. I've tried to deviate from this many times over the last few years for the sake of 'saving a few quid' or 'not being such a ponce' and every time I go back to Waitrose. Even my local independent grocers and butchers (with much higher prices and inconvenient opening hours) aren't a patch in my opinion.

So you say you look like a goon, and dress like a weirdo... And yet you are more than happy to judge others.. Interesting.

I love TESCO, they have every thing you could possibly want foodwise. Their staff are average but I couldn't care less about talking to them at the check-out, and I'm sure the feeling is mutual. I worked at an M&S: Simply Food when I was at 6th form, and the amount of bks you have to chat to the customers is unreal. Asking them how they are, do they need anything else, do they want their bags packing, do they want a credit card, do they need their arse wiping etc. I couldn't give a flying fk about what they did last weekend so what's the fking point in pretending? Mystery shoppers are on a par with mobile 'safety' camera operators. The only redeeming factor was decent pay.

I'd say ASDA is the worst place to shop, you get some minging people in there.
I'd suggest you don't persue a career in front end retail

Tesco can't be that bad. There was some posh totty in there last night asking about a product with a very sexy, posh accent.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but for marketing and positioning purposes, Sainsburys is places in the same group as Waitrose and M&S - which it isn't in my book. Same prices as Waitrose but without the quality! There is NO way that they are as cheap as Tesco, ASDA and Morrisons.

Did she give out an embarrassed little giggle when you explained you didn't work there?

Haven't you learnt yet? I make Tescos employees look like they're dressed smartly...

I understood she was confused by the large rack of F+F clothing you were dragging across the store.

She wasn't to know you were dragging it towards the tills.

F+F?

Anyway, haven't bought new clothes in years. (Apart from a suit for my sister's wedding to avoid being killed until dead.)
