35 year old here....and I remember the guys in my year getting the belt at high school up to 3rd year. Where the most punishment I got was a 'blue sheet', which had to be signed by your parents.

I remember those. A teacher would sign against each lesson to say how you'd behaved and whether they'd set homework, then you took it home to your parents who signed to say they'd seen the comments, and that you'd done the homework.

Held no terrors for me, I just faked my parents' signatures, same as I'd been doing on school reports for heaven-knows-how-long.

And I got away with it. For chrissake, you'd have thought they'd have checked, but nobody bothered.

I'd prefer the cane, my Dad would have given me worse had he only known how bad I was....

I went to vote and then saw my option was green and realised I voted over a decade ago. hehe

Although it’s funny seeing old posters like Nolar dog, what’s with this new poster bringing up old threads about school punishments?

Yep I think I was in that year that was the last in law.

I deserved it.

I think it should be brought back too.

Didn't they stop caning about 50 years ago? I'm 37 and I know it was banned long before I went to school.
I'm 37 and was caned? hmmmmmm wonder if i can sue somebody?
Banned in states schools in 1987 apparently - surprising as I thought it was way before then!

Yep I remember the day, the discussion. Being asked to select one from the cabinet.

Naturally I went for the slimmest one...

Didn't get caned, but my old headmaster kept his cane behind his office door, more as a threat than anything else.

Did see the chemistry teacher throw a board rubber though, and was once dragged down a hallway by an irate Iraqi maths teacher with my blazer over my head for a bit of naughtiness. I deserved it.

I got the cane at school and even some sadistic leather strap with slits at the end called the tawse

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tawse?wprov=sfti1

That was well after 1987.

I remember me and some friends were getting the cane for smoking and bringing alcohol into school. One tried to put a shoe insole down his pants to protect his buttocks but the noise gave it away and he ended up getting whacked even more.

Pretty horrific and sadistic sounding these days. My kids and wife are really shocked at some of the goings on at my boarding school. She went to state school and sometimes I tell a story about some event and then she’s like “that’s really weird and it’s not normal”

One of my housemasters killed himself years later when he was getting investigated in some historic child abuse case.

When I was at secondary school in the mid to late 90s caning had obviously been banned for many years but there were plenty of 'old school' teachers from those days still there. Things like flying board rubbers, a clip around the back of the head and getting dragged by your ear were commonplace, one particular teacher always wore a large cygnet ring and if he flicked his hand around the back of your head you'd know about it! He was also very good at giving you the best bking you've ever had without even raising his voice, on the flipside he was a damn good teacher and loved a laugh and a joke as long as you were behaving yourself smile

Absolutely

threw a perfectly formed snowball at a girl, she turned her head at just the right moment and it popped off in her visage, it was pristine.

Only problem was she was the heads daughter so I got 5 of the best.

And it was even worth it, such good shot it was.

In my last year at primary school in 1957 I had a teacher who was cane happy; rarely a day went by that he didn't cane one of the boys in the case (23 boys & 21 girls).
I discovered that there was a punishment book in the school office into which all corporal punishments had to be entered. I sneaked a look & very few of those given in my class had been entered.
The next time I was to be caned I said I would only accept it if it was entered in the punishment book; I was told to go back to my desk. Other boys used the same ruse & the number of cannings dropped dramatically for the rest of the year.
On our final day in the school one lad bought in a saw & during lunch time cut the cane into 3" lengths & scattered the pieces over the teacher's desk.

At secondary school one teacher was a chalk thrower. One lad was a dab hand at catching the chalk & tossing it back.

I only got plimsoled once at grammar school, can't recall the misdemeanour. However, at primary school, there was a right old hag, name of Miss Johnson. You know when you're about to pass by someone and you both keep dodging to the same side? Miss J and I did this several times. Had I been smarter or if she'd been nicer, one of us might have said, "Shall we dance?" and had a giggle. She cracked me round the side of the head with an empty breaktime milk bottle. 1/3 pint, if memory serves. Witch.

Hit six times as an 11 year old after the 4 pm bell had gone on a friday afternoon because I packed my things away. I had been at the school for two weeks in the first term.

I was too embarassed to tell my parents
