Another great one is Sainsburys Bran Flakes (IIRC). I can't remember the precise figures, but it's something along the lines of:

Small box (250g) £1.49.
Large box (500g) with red banding and strapline "GREAT VALUE EXTRA LARGE PACK" £2.99.

A massive saving of 0.4 pence per 100g laugh, glad I got in there quickly with THAT offer.
That isn't a saving, you're paying more for the large box... RIP OFF!!!!!

It might be important to look at this from the retailer/supplier side of the equation, not the retailer/shopper side. It's regularly the case that the deal on the shelf might not make sense to us as consumers, but the underlying deal for the retailer makes perfect sense.

Slightly apocryphal story but a hundred years ago one of the major DIY stores had a 'minor' mishap with some lawnmowers. Their buyer went a bit mental and bought 3 warehouses worth of stock at a good price. Unfortunately that year the summer weather was dire and stocks didn't sell as well as they should. The retailer was then left with practically 3 warehouses worth of stock (that couldn't be stacked due to H&S) and had to offload at, seemingly, ridiculous prices. The fact was that not off-loading would've cost them millions more in either waste or storage costs. The consumer sees a huge bargain and buys the lot, the retailer minimises the damage and the buyer gets the boot.

They're not charities smile

I can sort of live with this as for me it. Helps stifle the mind numbing boredom of shopping. Is it a deal or a con? Is a reasonable game to play, especially when you get to test your mental arithmetic along the way.

The one that really annoys me though is the yo-yo pricing. I am quite fond of Tesco’s Humbugs for example. In the last year these have been sold for 23p per bag, 90oddp per bag and about every price you can think of in between. Now granted that Humbugs aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but all supermarkets seem to do this sort of stunt on almost all products. I’ve forgotten how many times the price of a pack of butter has changed.

If I could find a store local to me that didn’t try to fleece me but was open and honest in it’s pricing I’d be there like a shot. As it is though I just feel shafted by most of them.

Co-op still has the silly pricing thing on it’s reduced goods as well, and BOGOF still works.

The thing I can never understand is Sainsbury's price comparison stickers. Walk round any branch, and they have them proudly festooned on products, seemingly at random, declaring that the price for this product in this store is the same as it would be in Tesco!!!!

Now, my immediate assumption, taken from the fact that I have not once ever seen a product priced lower than Tesco on these tickets is that absolutely every other product in the store except for these few dozen costs more there than it does at Tesco.

I did try emailing their marketing department through their website to ask them if this was indeed the message they were seeking to convey. Annoyingly, they never replied. irked

about 10 years ago sainsburys where doing a crazy offer on that pimms drink.

8.99 a bottle but you got something like 14 pounds worth of reward points with it.

i made a lot of money that week and was giving bottles away to all my mates.

Sad tosser that I am, I had a look at mysupermarket.co.uk that does a live comparison of Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys and Ocado (all the online versions)... where the best deals at Asda include

Hovis Granary Deli Rolls (4) or Wholemeal Rolls (4) for £1.00 each or any 2 for, er, £1.00

Or, Discovery Soft Flour Tortillas (8) for £1.27 each or any 2 for 27p less at £1.00 the pair
