That's pretty high, but manageable. That pic from the WTC aerial freaks me out though, I don't know how people can do that. It gives me weird pains in my toes when I think about it....

I believe there was a whole thread dedicated to this very topic not that long ago! I'm not sure the answer was ever found.... smile
I assume that once building work is completed they will winch a smaller permanent crane to the top and then use this to lower the big crane back down in pieces. The small crane will then live on the top of the building in case you need to put a new A/C unit or whatever on the roof and don't fancy doing it by chopper.

Great photos, but this gives rise to something that has always bothered me - ho do they get those cranes up there? In fact, how do really tall cranes get put up anywhere?

No circular stuff about getting a bigger crane along to lift it into place please!!!
dont fancy being in that traffic jam in the background!
Are those balconies that surround the rest of the building? eek

There's a special name for the method used but I can't remember what it is - someone on here posted about it in another skyscraper thread. It's pretty clever though.

Too high is the range between the height from a ladder you can fall without breaking your legs and a height from which your parachute opens in time. Below the ladder range is ok, above the parachute range is ok (if you have a parachute on that is).

That's clearly a model. Look, someone's left a sink plunger on it (RH side)

It's not going to be any higher, it was 'topped out' back in January.

Yup.

One crane lowers the other one down.
Then the remaining one takes itself apart to make it smaller.
Then either a temporary crane or a davitt arm or something is fitted and lowers the remainder of the crane down.

Sometimes they leave small crane or arm up there. Sometimes it is taken down.

ETA for the real big buildings there will be a few others on lower floors and will stage the drop.

Did anyone read about that mad French motherfker who climbed the Petronas Towers last week with no safety gear? (he is renowned for climbing a lot of tall/famous things without safety gear).

Fred's chimney climbing vids have been posted on here a couple of times, that man had no fear glands and b0ll0cks made of granite.

I hate that pic, it makes me thing of the people that jumped out of the twin towers.
Jesus....they looked into that void...and jumped.
I don't think this is a picture of the North Tower. The roof foot print on either side was larger than in this picture.

My stomach turns over whenever I see that picture, and I wasn't great up the CN Tower the other year lol
If they're fixed to the metal by a harness I can't see the problem.
