Cider With Roadies?
I'd go with "Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the North."

I've not read either of these Maconie books for a long while and I imagine Skem is mentioned in both, but likely more detailed in Pies.
Both great reads and recommended smile

Drove through Jaywick the other day, a town best burnt down and left to the encroaching sand dunes!

I'd like to nominate Newport - I know there's some decent bits but the place has a very "edgy" feel to it, compared to, say, Cardiff or Swansea.

The south wales valleys towns have probably been mentioned here, but I'll defend them - we have amazing countryside all around, yes there are some dheads around but every individual I've actually spoken to around here has been pleasant and friendly - but it can be hard to get stuff done without ending up having a conversation with someone!
I know what you mean, I would have said Baglan if it still looked like the set of Blade runner, but I drove past a few months ago and they have obviously got rid of a lot of industry (and I assume jobs sadly). Anyone know when ?

So I will go for Slough.

Stafford. An utter dump, not one redeeming feature or area. The local council is also unbelievably greedy yet lazy, the state of some roads are disgraceful. Although, I would also be inclined to agree with OP about Basingstoke, although at least with Basingstoke there is a fairly decent food court on the side of Festival Place with a good selection of restaurants in close proximity to the cinema. Stafford doesn’t have anything close, bloody awful place.

I remember one place a couple of years ago.

Me and the old man were on the train back from Wimbledon to Guildford after a drinking session. Anyway, I needed a piss (This particular train didn't have a toilet) and so we had to get off at the next stop. The thing is, I cant remember what the place was called. Just one of the many stops on the waterloo bound route.

Anyway, we had half hour to wait for the next train. And so to kill time, we just decided to have a wonder around (Whilst looking for another pub) But this place was an absolute soulless dump. With one small high street, and nothing else.

Like I said, I cannot remember the name of the place. But I wont be going back there in hurry.

Someone earlier in the thread posted Stourbridge?

Which does seem a bit odd, it's a totally inoffensive town, certainly compared to the W Midlands greats of The Black Country/Kidderminster/birmingham/wolverhampton/Coventry

Every time I drive through it I can't see anything decadent or really bad at all, perhaps someone can illuminate me.

I thought about nominating Newtown in Wales because I had to go there once - it's in the middle of nowhere!

But maybe that is a good thing. So I'd nominate Bracknell that is just up the road - better described as Crapnell. It really is miserable.

Ah Bewdley, the place that everyone (except Bewdley folk) is up in arms about because they decided to enforce no-parking rules for motorbikes too.

Apparently the bikers single handily save Bewdley from economic ruin each year and now you're all doomed.

Make your moving plans now whilst there's still time!

Bracknell is nowhere near Newtown?

It'll have been mentioned a few times I'm sure, but most towns/cities around the west mids.
Dudley, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Tipton.

Grew up in and still live in Dudley. Haven't had any trouble, but it's just pretty grim and unremarkable.
A lot of much needed investment going on around the town centre with new college campuses, metro line extension etc so hopefully it brightens up a little.

Probably not

Bewdley folk are too busy being up in arms about almost everything else.

Is the bridge open, or not?
Is the river too high, or low?
Are they swans, or geese?
Is it too hot for dogs, or too cold?

Etc etc smile

Yes it was Pies and Prejudice. It’s a very good travelogue type of book. Not quite in the Bill Bryson league of writing, but a little bit like Notes From a Small Island (but written by a Northerner, about Northern England). I’ll have to give Cider with Roadies a read.
On that subject; Thank You For The Days, by Mark Radcliffe is a really good read too.

Hungerford

Me and my old man went drinking there one Saturday a couple of years ago. It's a lovely place, but every pub we went into just gave us the 'Drink your pints and get out!' vibe because we were outsiders.
