to occupy my brain
This is the key bit. It's about doing things that take your mind off your current reason for the stress. If you can control your mind (easier said than done) then you can stop yourself thinking about whatever the problems are that you're having in your life. Otherwise, doing something to distract your mind is the next best thing.
Good thing: Go for a run - lets me sort my head out and get things in perspective while out of contact with others.
Bad thing: Beer
I find that I end up categorising stuff that is stressing me in one of 3 ways:
Bad thing: Beer
I find that I end up categorising stuff that is stressing me in one of 3 ways:
- Stuff I am in control of - work out what to do and do it.
- Stuff completely out of my control - accept it and move on.
- Stuff partly in my control - work out what I can influence to improve the situation then try to do that.
Go for a walk (as much as you can in central london!) and actually enjoy interacting with random people and putting a smile on their face - improves my mood no end. Read a book (if I can concentrate long enough). If I had a car I would definitely add going for a blat to the list. If I lived nearer a golf course I'd go for a "spoilt" walk too.
