I recently went to view an incredible former Navy mine-sweeper,
Do you happen to know its name/former name?
Sorry for late reply, piccies were on my other computer. Her name was / is "Egeria". I think she was built around 1953. HTH.
1959, perhaps?

The 1937 grafitti includes a half-drawn Spitfire, a year before they were produced.

Chances of me exploring a deserted lunatic asylum, even in sunny broad daylight: absolutely none!!
Could be from later on, however the writing around the Spitfire is from 1937. And I don't believe this is faked, as it is drawn on a wall of a tunnel about 1 mile into the hillside!

It's quite fun looking around the asylums, it's interesting to see what they were all about - the cells are quite frightening however. They're tiny, I can't begin to imagine what life would be like living inside them. It was scary enough having to sit in one for half an hour whilst waiting for my friend to go and collect some other people!

There were pre-production Spits around in 1937.

A link to this was sent to me last night by one of my mate's who like his trains.

http://www.tunnelsuk.com/site_visits/2010/june/06_...

It's the long closed tunnel between Bleanrhondda and Bleangwynfi in South Wales and is within a couple of miles of my house, although I'm too young to remember it being open, in fact I think the entrances had already been buried by the time I was born.
There's a few more pics and some info on here too

Those Asylum pics remind me of how the Knowle asylum north of Fareham looked before they turned it into a Village, the undeveloped buildings looked alot like that inside.

^^ This is two minutes from my house, I was tempted to go for a viewing!
I had thoughts of underground storage but the walls are ten feet thick, you would never manage to get any cars down there.
Is it sold?

Edited for speeling.

I was watching "the road" last night, and after going through wiki discovered that a load of it was filmed on a 13 mile stretch of highway in the US (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandoned_Pennsylvania_Turnpike)

Short video of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOq5lcTSFbU&fea... - I'm sure there must be better vids out there.

Part of my last job was to go into abandoned sections of london tube stations and tunnels to insure they were still structurally sound. Unfortunately I don't have any photos, but it was a little bit scary at times, and fascinating at other times!

I thought it had a ramp/tunnel that allowed access

I went for a wander down that road last year, same time I visited Centralia.

No idea, but it's no longer listed to ASPC ... i'd have loved to have bought it and converted "downstairs" into music/cinema rooms!! AWESOME!!

I also consdidered a vewing ... but SWMBO said she couldn't live there alone while i was offshore!

I found this site-

http://www.abandoned-britain.com/photos.html

There's a few asylums on that site.

Also this site is pretty good (same photographer)
