For some reason this bubbled up randomly from the depths of my memory in the middle of the night - I remember it well but have probably not thought about it in 35 or more years, so very random.

Anyone else remember "Valley of the Dinosaurs"?

Yes I do. Wasn't it played during Swap Shop on Saturday mornings?

£300 was a lot of cash for my parents back then. I also lusted after one of those bikes.
my parents definitely weren't skint but £300 for a kids' bike!!
How much was a Burner 'back in the day' then? that thing just looks like a BMX with a load of plastic tatt on it!
definitely <£100
Yep. I was clearing the boxes in the loft the other day and found all the original paperwork when my dad bought me my Burner back in the day. It was the povvo-spec Red one with yellow tyres - the receipt is marked up at £97 for the bike, discounted to £83 as my dad sort-of knew the bike shop owner. Don't know the year as only the day/date written on the receipt. Also paid £12.99 for the official Raleigh Burner helmet (no discount for that, apparently).

We def weren't skint growing up but no way my old man would entertain spending another £20-£30 more on a bike (I really wanted the Ultra Burner). £300 would have been mental for a kids bike at the time!

EFA: Just dug out the receipt, the helmet was £12.99, not £29.99(!)

My first racer, the Raleigh Arena, probably c.1978.
Must've been the Christmas of '78 or '79 when the streets of our estate filled up with pre-teenage lads on Raleigh Arenas. There were, what seemed like, hundreds of them.

Me? I got one of these that Christmas...

10 speed Falcon Black Diamond. I loved that bike!

As I got into cycling last year, every time I see this this thread it has me running off to Ebay to see if I can find an unmolested one for sale at a reasonable price. The search goes on.

Just reminded me. Cow-horn handlebars!

There was also a craze at our school (1978?) where everyone had extended forks with some tiny little front wheel. It was starting to get ridiculous where they were getting longer and longer until eventually the school banned them.

Not so much the cowhorns but there was a bit of a craze of angling drop bars vertically. Never saw the point myself.

The other thing that was popular was 'crazy bikes' which were basically a frame, wheels, bars and a saddle sourced from the municipal tip. No tyres and no brakes. Never appealed to me either.

I'm sure I had one of these as a kid. sure we all had pogs, but the best ones were coloured like that.. AND power rangers too. I can't remember though if they were part of cereal or part of sticker packs.

Reading another thread and thought. Do people still do the tobacco run? I recall cars being confiscated and then sold on with missing seats so they could pack them out with as much contraband as possible.

Or did the government put a stop to all this?

About the same time? Fuel tax protests and then this group that tried to do cheaper fuel but I never got an update on this.

Was in a charity shop with my fiancée and daughter on Saturday.

On the shelf for sale was a Mega Drive 2. £60.00.

Lovely memories of the old consoles. Very rose tinted though.

I didn't buy it. smile

That's a ridiculous price for a mega drive and for a charity shop!

(Larger) Charity shops seem to all look at eBay these days. Cannot blame them I suppose. That's why I look in the small cat/dog charity shops.
Although I did pick something up and suggest they eBay it rather than leave it in some shop window.

I think once they started branding them "UK Duty Paid" or the like it went from a slightly naughty thing to do to proper criminality - these days I here you can still buy cheap(er) tobacco on the streets, but a lot is counterfeit and very dangerous, even by the standards of smoking.

I read recently someone got 3 years for selling unlicensed tobacco.
